I've got to have 2 generators for the new farm. The builder has quoted 2 Taylor 125kw with Perkins diesels. Anybody know anything about Taylor generators? I've also heard about a deal from a family friend on 2 Onan/Cummins 350kw generators. These both have about 400 hours on them, which is barely anything, and they're $8k each which is about 1/2 price of the Taylor/Perkins 125's. It's twice the power I need but Pilgrims requires us to have 2 generators on a 6 house farm. This is more than likely the deal I'm going with but was just wandering if anybody knew anything about the Taylor generators?

Onan is out of business and has been for some time. Parts can be very hard to find.

Onan is still part of Cummins. https://www.cummins.com/generators
I would go the bigger units as Perkins was bought up by Cat and parts ARE becoming problematic. Or would look around for a True Cat line Generator set. Edited by DMiller - 17 Jul 2019 at 2:57pm |

Supposed to check them out probably one day next week. There's an older gentleman in the next county over that's a generator wiz they say. The owner is going to have him go through them and see what he thinks. JoeM, you might know him. I think he's one of your neighbors

Yes you might be ok with those. The old Onans like on welders and RV Generators are next to impossible to get parts for. I thought they were completely finished. |

to get parts for the old Onans you have to get them from Cummins. You can't get on line or from a non Cummins dealer. Parts are expensive.

Something you might want to think about. When I owned the farm fuel business, I set a lot of 1000 gallon LP tanks for the purpose of running generators. You don't have gas sitting around going bad and if your fuel supplier doesn't handle premium #2 fuel you have the risk of your #2 fuel filling with algie. You don't have to blend fuel. These gen sets were set to run 1 hour each month to keep the battery's charged. Now when they run they will send a message to your smart phone if the machine senses a problem.

We had one at work, but I can't remember the company that sold them, but it had a John Deere engine. Parts should be readily available for them.

We use diesel generators so we can use the fuel in tractors. Each generator will have a 270 gallon tank with a hand pump and we pull from each tank. That way they should stay fairly close as far as the amount left in them. We also have to run and document the run once a week for a minimum of 30 minutes and have the smart capabilities. |

Pawpaw had a 80kw to run his farm that had a Chevy 502 that ran on propane. It sat in the building crooked so the exhaust pipes would point toward the back of the neighbors house. The same neighbor that tried to sue them for building chicken houses. He had it set to crank up and run 30 minutes every Friday morning around 7am and, no there were no mufflers

PawPaw did good! Was the 502 a 6 cylinder? We had one in a ‘53 GMC/Pirsch pumper. Would flow water all night long and not miss a beat.

May have been. Was a big V something. Radiator was almost as tall as me. I don't remember how many plug wires it had. It burned with the chicken house it was next to almost 20 years ago

From what I remember of this one, the engine would have a hard time getting in the bed of a pickup truck. Thing was massive
