D-10 series III. Can the front crank seal be changed without pulling the timing gear cover?

I don't know why not, if you can see it and get a self tapping screw, screwed into it in a couple places. I have a threaded rod that fits my vice grip, and a piece of round stock with a hole thru it. Put it together and you have a nice slide hammer for grabbing the head of the screw.

It can be done, but it's best to remove it.  If the timing cover is not properly centered, that new seal will be finished in a few months.  I did the front seal on my D14 in the winter and removed the front cover, not a big job.

If you don't remove the cover, you need to somehow check crankshaft OD to the seal bore ID for concentricity. That would most easily be done by using a plug gage, with a bore no more than .002 over the crank size and the plug no less than .002 under the Seal bore size.
