Most of you know that I'm new to pulling so, i thought I'd ask about how people set up their tires.

From watching pulls, it appears that most people have about 1/2 the new tread depth. Is there a optimum tread height and what are your feeling about how the tread height increases traction?  Do the tires need to be cut flat, while mounted, for best results?

I've asked about rim width and it seems that there are different feeling on that. Is there any more info on that?

Are there tire pressures that work better with different size tires and how low can you go on tire pressure, before you risk spinning the tube and searing the valve stem?

Do guy's knurl the bead of the rim, to run lower pressure?

Doesn't anyone have a opinion on any of the tire related things I've posted or, better yet, comparisons?

What about tire brand and ply rating? What's the best tread angle and are R4's used?

I'm here to learn.

Too many variables to consider, including good prepared clay tracks to a hay field that got mowed off to pull on.  Any F-1 tire at half tread is probably about as good as it gets, so the lug doesn't fold over when heavily loaded. Top of the lug tapered down helps it bite better on hard tracks. Drag your puller down a cement road with all your weights on it and spin the tires in reverse for a 1/2 mile or so to get an idea of sharpened tires. Drag it with another tractor at a slow speed but spin the rear tires to be sharpened at 3 mph or so. I prefer Firestones F-151 tires or Armstrong's. If I had to pull with Goodyear's, I'd probably quit. I never run less than 7 lbs of air and I have never seen anyone spin one loose on a rim in antique pulling.

Antique stock, diesel super stock, or something in between?  Far too many variables.  Generally, the wider the better and the taller the better and the less tread the better (to a point).

How about if I chain it and spin in reverse, on asphalt?

I looked at this Firestone site and couldn't find anything that was F151.

Aaron, That this time, I'm only pulling Antique Stock @ 3mph. My rules allow 16.9 x 28, in the 6000 class. That's what I'm running on my gas D17 but, the tires are mismatched, right now, I'm looking for new (to me) tires.

Are R4's allowed and if so, what do you think of them? It seems to me that the tread angle, might be a plus.

Also, what ply rating is being used? I would think that the lower ply rating would be a advantage and give better flexibility and a longer foot print.

My WD45 14.9x28 tires are almost new and work great on most tracks. I pull 3500 up to 5000. I run 6 to 8 psi
Alternatively i have 13.6x38 tires that I run on it for clubs that allow them. They are worn and beat up but still amazing enough, get great traction. These will outpull the 14.9x28's

My D17 has 16.9x28 151 that are worn about 1/2 but still has a pretty sharp edge. The D17 only works when the track is tacky. Dry tracks I can't get a grip at all. M 17 works best at around 5500-6000 lbs

Other pullers (WD's that use 16.9x28's) are in the same boat. They don't do very well unless they are in the upper weight classes.

Some even concrete with a broom finish and spin the tire backwards will cut it down pretty quick.

You drag the tractor so you have fresh concrete/asphalt to eat on the tire. You chain it and you just leave a layer of rubber in one spot and it doesn't work nearly as well.

Had a guy show up with a Oliver 66 standard, had R4's on the back.

That's very interesting.

It does seem like the tread angle would be better but, I haven't seen them used is why I ask.

I sold Firestone rears for 22 years and never heard of a Firestone 151. I ordered semi loads of firestones every year. There was no reference to 151's in any Firestonr literature that I can find.

F151 is molded right into the sidewall. All Traction Field and Roads.

We have 3 sets of 151 Firestone 15-5-38s. 1 uncut, 1 top cut, 1 full cut. Don’t think they were only sold in Illinois.

I've had 15.5 x38 Firestones, too. Said 151 on sidewalk in big letters. I think they have been out of production for a while, tho.
sometimes I walk out to my shop and look around and think "Who's the idiot that owns this place?"
