I have a 1950 WD I was useing it to back blade and it was working fine. I am thinking my clutch is out of adjust ment or I have something else going on. Push the clutch in and move the gear lever to reverse or any other gear for that matter and it is not a smooth transition. To try to avoid damaging the gears any more than what may hav happend. I shut it down dis engage the hand clutch and push the foot clutch. Place it in the gear I want and start it up. Release the foot clutch and use the hand clutch and brought it back to the barn. So what need I do ?

How much play do you have in the clutch pedal? Adjust the rod to where you have an inch or so. Your throwout bearing my be shot, too.

Are you saying it grinds gears when you try to shift gears using either clutch? MACK

Very similar to what my WD was doing. Try checking the "fingers" on the throwout. Mine was was acting similar--no slip but not shifting right. I had adjusted it at the pedal last year, which helped for a while, but still wasn't right. When I took the inspection plate off and looked at it, two of the three adjusting bolts were loose. The jam nuts were there, but not tight. My theory is that I plow 1/4 mile of driveway with chains on during the winter, and it shakes the heck out of everything. I fixed it, and also gained adjustment on the pedal.

Hopefully when the weather permits I can take a look to see if anything is lose. As for pedal play yeah it is more like a foot. Hand clutch has no bearing on the gear selection. Pushing the foot clutch then placing it into gear is where I have the issues with the tractor running. Especially after it is warmed up. Shut it off I can shift it into any gear I want. The bolt that I loosened up to try and make the adjustment is the one on the left side of the tractor and when I did that I heard what sounded like a spring let go. The rod attached to the pedal is also attached to that same shaft.

Sounds like the spring inside the bell housing broke that brings the throw out bearing back off the fingers (return spring). You'll have to replace or hook that back up, but don't think there's room to do that job without taking the engine out. It's a tight spot to work in through the inspection cover to fix that.

Oh boy, it will be an effort for me to get under there just to attemped it through the cover let alone to remove the motor in my current physical condition. It's not sounding like a simple fix. I wasn't planning on removing the motor and such until I was ready to redo the gaskets and repaint it again.
