5th wheel setups for pulling a camper?  I have a Chevy 1500 Silverado and I just bought a Reese from a gal who's hubby died.  She had already sold the truck..Cry

Hi, I just bought a hitch and plate from a gal.  It has no bolts or anything that would secure it to the truck.
It is a Reese 15K hitch.  Is there a serial number on these?
Anybody ever installed one in this truck?
I know I need the rails and installation hardware, but what else?

I had a trailer hitch dealer install mine, my hitch wasn't one they sold, but they did good on installing it.

Ted, if you are not familiar with etrailer.com, take a look.

I had a guy give me a 15K Reese, went to etrailer and ordered a rail install kit specifically for the truck that was to be used.  In this case a 2012 F250.  Comes with great instructions plus they probably have a how to video on the site.

I have a Reese pin in setup in my 99 F250, requires brackets off the frame to under the bed in specific spots to keep the flex breaking under control. In all actuality the mounts attach Thru the Bed to the Frame by bolting and brackets. I would see if can get just the mounting hardware and instructions thru Reese, sometimes that will be available.

Just a thought but wouldn't a 5th wheel trailer be a little much for a 1/2 ton pickup? Seems even the travel trailer with a 5th wheel seem a bit heavy for a 1/2 ton

30 years ago I had a 29 ft 5th wheel and a 1978 F150 SuperCab with a 351 - 4 speed... Trailer probably weighted  6000 pounds ........... pulled it fine.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

lots of big 5th wheel campers out there now that are supposed to be 1/2 ton towables. Ted...if'n you do it yourself, make sure you gots lots of sharp drill bits!

As other have said. goto Reese website to find your unit. you you can't, email them  with dimensions and a picture of yours and ALL numbers stamped on the hitch.
As for pulling...I've been to that 5 bolt rims indicate 3500# axles, so 3500*2= 7000# and any 1/2 ton can pull that.
You'll need to install a 7Way RV style recptacle  in the back ,left area of the inner fender of make a 6'+-  extension cable to connect the trailer to the trucks wiring.

I've been doing a lot of studying so far and learning.  It's got the wiring in it already but I have to add a break control.  I've done that before.  I've just never put in a 5th.  From what I can see, I'm gonna probably weld it in but I'm not real sold on that either.  What if I don't like this 1/2 ton for hauling?  What about hauling a couple of tractors instead of one?  Maybe I'll just drill the holes and mount it that way.
When I get over this bug that I have, it should be warm enough out to work on it all and get it done.

most (all ?) PUS after 97 are prewired for the trailer brake controller. It's the 4 or 6 pin connector under thedash the dealer dudes don't know what it's for....The 'controller' mfr will have an adapter cable so NO cutting/splicing of wires ! PITA under the dash with bifocals.sigh.
Near hitch end of truck either yoy'll have a 7pin already installed or again, a connector, ready for a 'cable'.
I'd bolt the 5th wheel plate on as that's HOW they were designed to be mounted. All seem to have the pin a few inches forward of rear axle.

10-4 on what JB posted.  As I recall the mountings for the hitch rails from etrailer come fabbed so they bolt to the frame without welding - engineered that way.  Probably liability.

Nothing to it if you have a hitch made for your truck. I just put a gooseneck ball in a 89 that had always had a 5wheel. I got lucky and found a local dealer that had what I needed on the shelf, with a inch of dust on it.Wink An then I got cheap and asked if they would discount it,Wink as when was the next guy going to want a 88 to 94 truck hitch. And darn if it didn't work for a change.Clap 

Would of been a much bigger job to make do with parts that don't have the wholes in the right place. As thin as that metal is could even be dangerous to put to many more whole in it.

Ted- don't weld to the frame... use existing bolt holes.  If the hitch doesn't have the appropriate hardware to span the holes, save yourself the headache and have an RV or hitch shop install it... the Reese is a pretty common, and well supported system.

A half-ton pickup doesn't have much towing capacity in BUMPER hitch, but put a 5th wheel on it, and you actually have something really good.

A bumper hitch is substantially BEHIND the rear axle, and as a result, the rear suspension loading is actually amplified by leverage.  Because of that overhanging load, The rear suspension carries MORE than the actual tongue load, and it DECREASES the amount of load on the front axle.  It also causes lateral thrust to reduce directional stability of the truck in sway.  Going to a 5th wheel totally eliminates lateral thrust's effect on steering stability, and it allows (if the hitch is slightly ahead of the rear axle) allows the front axle to carry some of the hitch load, which improves stability substantially. 

Although most everything wears a 2" (Class 4) reciever Very few half-ton trucks will safely pull anything with 1000lbs on a tounge.  Sure, you can put it on, but with 10,000lbs of trailed load (the 10%rule) will make that truck sag bad in the back, ride high in the nose, and wiggle around the road in dips and curves.  Put that same 1000lbs in the center of the bed of a 1/2t pickup truck, and it'll trail solid as a rock.
Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.

As it stands, I am in contact with a guy from Reese.  We're doing this right.  I'll keep you posted.
