so what is it about combine engines that make them more powerful than the tractor engines they evolved from?

I don't know for sure but if I had to guess I would say they had alot higher compression than the older ones.

Different way the horsepower is rated.  Combines are engine horsepower where as tractors are PTO horsepower or drawbar horsepower.

Also combine engines are almost always rated at a higher rpm to get more hp too.

 AC 2900 turbo eng out of combine with 800hrs on major $900. Was that a good buy?  I didn't get it. Was at P-M auction. yesterday. I went to $750 and got out.

That was CHEAP!  Salvage yard would want at least $2000 plus your old one.
