They came in non-turbo versions also, so beware even if it says XT Rough timeline (Correct me if I am wrong) 64-65 were the same. 66 had factory updates for shifting (Something else?) 68 had larger axles, fender, other minor updates (Series II) 69 series III had Rear end updates to beef it up. Depends on how they were used, if pulled/used hard (Overweight) the rear ends had issues on the early years. Cavitation can be a issue on all years. Gears can be a problem if abused Slow travel speed. |

Yes the XT came in gas version also with the larger 301 gas motor.

Any 190 or 190XT built from 1966 and on had larger axles and most of the earlier XT's had either larger axles installed or harder axles installed through an Allis Chalmers update program.

I have a gas 1966 cab 190 it has great power steering the seat and controls are comfortable and well layer out. They run very smooth and mine is quiet. The cab Is old technology,No AC and my heater has been removed. I do pull the pin and remove the lower door in the summer and leave in the shed. With the windows open and the door removed it pretty comfortable in the summer.The power director shifts easily berween two speeds. You must clutch to get any other gears. A power shift is nicer. I have the manual PTO so must use the clutch fo PTO work and I only have the 540 PTO. Hyd PTO and 540/1000 PTOs were an option. The hydraulics seam to work the same as other tractors mine has Pioneer couplers so I connect to other farm equipment without any problems. The three point works as well as any other. I have borrowed implements from the farm.

Be carful they had trouble with the rest end . I had the series 3 and broke the ring gear and pinion plowing . It was my main tractor so it did a lot of work too.O rings leaked in the bottom of sleeves so overhaul job too. Good tractor lots of power and nice to run.

Like any other tractor no matter the brand it depends on how they were used and treated. Especially the series II and III, if they were used as intended by the factory few problems occurred with the rear ends. As Charlie stated, problems occurred when tires were loaded, heavy weights also hung, and pulling equipment far bigger than they we’re intended to pull. In most cases they would pull it just fine but anytime you continue to do so, problems from the extra stress took its toll. Charlie and I both have series II 190XT’s, neither jump out of gear, and are strong tractors. Thankfully, previous owners apparently didn’t abuse the transmission by shifting the main gears on the go which was a weakness in the XT. Series III was the best XT, it received the heavier 4 pinion rear end which solved a lot of the earlier problems. Drive it, put it in each gear, make sure the power director shifts smooth but firm. If possible, put a load behind it and go down a steep hill if you have one to see if it pops out of gear when you pull the throttle back. 3rd gear was the most usual gear to pop out but try all four. Great news if it doesn’t jump out of gear, expensive to fix if it does. They are a great tractor IMO, as long as they haven’t been abused.

In my opinion the 190XT was built for high speed farming, like Case advertised once in some of their literature in the 70's, and the Allis Crop Hustler series stressed. Meaning pulling a smaller implement faster and in the end you're more efficient and easier on your tractor and probably do more acres in a day. So find a plow or disk traditionally pulled by a 75 hp tractor in your soil and hook the 190XT to it and pull it faster or throttled back. I wouldn't pull a disk much faster than 4 or 4-1/4 mph so throttle back.

I also think the 190/190XT got a bad reputation because of owner/operator abuse.Most tractors I see in their manuals were sold to have fluid in the tires and a set of wheel weights or maybe two.Some manuals state if the tractor was loaded over a certain weight the warranty was void.Go and put a set of duals and a lot of extra weight,turn the injection pump up etc and then have drive line problems.Who is to blame? Not the tractor its being abused.Turning a tractor designed to have a working weight say of 10,000 lbs and 100 HP and turning it into a 15,000 lb tractor and 130 HP with dual wheels is about guaranteed to have issues with the rear/trans.

Howdy, Fellows a big thank you. I be looking for a few of these problems when I go to see this tractor. Its got the big tires on rear that book says is for rough terrain, rear sectional weights and front slabs. Straight metal and pre air cleaner with pipe that goes to exhaust stack. Sure looks tough with them big ,wide tires on! Thanks Kurzy

Surely not saying dual wheels with the insides loaded is a sin, as there are certain soils that demand the extra traction. Factory pictures show XT’s pulling 20’ disks with this set up. Another picture with just singles at the rear. Mine has the full factory front weights, and loaded rears, no duals. As for the 20’ AC disc, I will find out in the spring how she handles it. Charlie and I are refurbishing one now that we bought earlier last year.
