What is the real story behind this "MOVEMENT"?
I wish I knew how to handle a very uncomfortable family situation where my 19 year old Grand Daughters "Mutt" (I met for the first time on Christmas) took a notion to viciously bark at me (only me) in my house and made threating moves like it wanted to bite me. The dog was not on a leash. I never heard of a trained "Service Dog" acting out like a guard dog around strangers. Things got out of hand with this dog 3 separate times during its first short visit and LAST VISIT TO MY HOUSE. Granddaughter is supposed to need this "Mutt" with her at all times and caries "PAPERS" to prove it not just a pet. |

We could debate the need for certain service dogs........In any case, what ever organization provided that particular service dog is SORELY LACKING in training.

Is this a service dog or an emotional support dog? Service dogs are generally well trained and do their jobs providing a service to a physically disabled person. Seeing eye dogs. Dogs for paraplegics that can help etc.
Emotional support dogs are there because the individual cant cope with some emotional stressors unless the dog is there. Generally they are way less trained. And though I'm sure they are very helpful for some people they seem To have become a way to guarantee you can bring your unruly mutt anywhere you go. TDF Edited by TDF - 26 Dec 2018 at 9:05am |

Never got so much as a wiff of Me before the first Attack. I was viciously attacked for no obvious reason I can think of. Was it my voice or the cap I was waring that day? I was not about to put my hand out and get bit. The book says do not pet a "Service Dog". It was the dog. This "Mutt" is the farthest thing from being a "Service Dog" as possible.
I can't just come out and say What I know as a FACT in this matter. I'm sorry for my Grandchild being so Needy that the family just grabbed the first very expensive dog that came along.

WOW what an experience Ken. Was it a mutt? or a known breed?
I think I'd have a serious talk with Mom and Dad and get rid of THAT dog before it bites someone and the attorneys are knocking on the door. That is NOT acceptable behavior for a 'service dog'. |

Wow!! Sounds like it is geared more to "GUARD DOG" than either a support or service dog!! I wonder about where it came from and how old it was and if it has had any obedience training. If it is a rescue dog it may have had bad experiences with someone resembling you.
What do her parents think of the dog, have they been around it?

I do NOT allow dogs...ANY dogs into my house. MY house MY rules same at MY shop.... you bring your dog it STAYS IN YOUR RIDE... I don't bring my cats to your place, so keep your mutt in your truck. he didn't like what I said but... the dogs NEVER been back. If a dog looks at you 'funny', stand on one leg. If it attacks, kick in head with leg in air, then return to 1 legged standing. If he attacks again, repeat...hit in head, return standing on one leg. Never ,ever had a dog try a 2nd time... why it works... one legged humans kicking dogs ain't 'normal' so they get the message. If the owner of the dog don't like it.. say.. don't come close to me and stand on one leg.... if they approach, kick them on their kneecap, return to 1 legged pose.... Jay

The emotional support dog is the new “thing”. Incredible how many dogs you see traveling in airports/ airplanes. If they qualify as “service dog” they fly free. Several occurrences of other passengers being bitten

People that don't take this sort of thing seriously will spoil it for the folks that really need and have good service dogs.
My Grandson was in need of a emotional support dog early in life. It was a white Lab named Hunter. He is well trained and behaved. Grandson grew out of his need but still has him.

My mom is 91 & lives in a nursing home. Loves visits from my dog, an almost 10 year old medium size mix breed without formal training. I can leave my dog in Mom's room while I go talk to the nurses or visit another resident. Staff can come in & take care of Mom without any interference from Katie. The administrator keeps a jar of treats in her office for Katie. Residents & staff generally enjoy Katie's visits. I think my mom would rather have a visit from Katie than from me. When I visit without Katie Mom always asks why.

I don't know your family so do not want to be to pointed in my comments but in general.
In The Land of Fruits and Nuts the under 40 club has been riding the service dog thing to death. The major airlines where going on with it and dang near any animal you could carry was let on from what I heard. But they have had enough and has to in a cage unless a seeing eye or to help with some other physical handicap. They get a vest for the critter that says service animal and away they go in stores and just about everywhere. My guess from afar is the dog could tell you are old school and thought it was a bit of non cents. It knows it has life make and most likely has never had a day of real training to make it behave. Kind of free range like many of the Snowflake crowd that are used to doing as they please. Shameless I expect you got lick me to death puppies. But they come on like a pack of wolves we are probably not going to be friends anymore. But I am not going to come calling with a cat in tow. ![]() Dan my mother was plenty set in here ways to not have inside dogs and cats at home. But after her stroke in the care facility she was always happy to have people that she didn't know stop with there dogs to visit. My mother in law has bad dementia and is also happy to have dogs stop and visit. If you have the time I bet you could spread a lot of cheer with a well behaved dog. |

In my humble opinion, I believe that dog is an incident waiting to happen and a liability

Ken, if the dog is aggressive without any provocation it has a problem and is poorly trained or not trained at all. The "emotional support" animal bandwagon has been grossly overloaded and there are people who truly need emotional support and the animal fills that void but far too many are just taking advantage of the new fad and ruining it for those who really need help. Our black lab is my bride's "emotional support" (mine, too) but she has had basic obedience training and is always on a leash when out in public and we only go into businesses that allow pets.

I do believe the Dog who saw me as a threat was one of those so called EMOTIONAL SUPPORT DOGS. This Little Stinker has no idea what it is here for. It sure isn't able to tell the difference between friend or foe . I think if your 19 and Female and it has been determined by the experts that a Emotional Support Dog will make it easier for her to get through life. I'm OK with That. BUT. Be real careful with choosing a dog that has absolutely no aggressive traits . Get a dog that wants to be cuddled and loved on by anyone and everyone and don't scare the crap out of her 78 year old Grandpa by barking and baring its teeth

why would a 19 year old girl need a support dog at her grandpas house ? Park the dog in the garage for 2 hours.
