I just bought a 2’x3’ piece of 1 1/4” thick steel plate. I need to cut it in to 6” strips. I don’t think my torch is big enough. Any ideas?
Joe would be so proud of what I paid for this. |

They have a computer operated plasma cutter at the steel shop I use, they don't charge much to set up and do all cuts. You might call the bigger steel places and see if they can accommodate, faster and will be done right.

I told you wrong. It’s 2’x4’. I need to make 2 cross cuts and then (3) 3’ cuts. I’ll weld them all together to make a 5”x6” square 3’ long. It will stand on end and be the anvil for my power hammer. |

Done a little math on that steel.Got .83 of cu ft at 475 cu ft equal 394 lbs .Might not be absolute correct but worked around steel for years and know it is heavy.

Band saw or power hack saw of some sort. I had some 1 1/2 x 5 I wanted to make some weights and just used a cheap power hack saw. It didn't cut that hard.

There is something about beating steel into submission that is so satisfying. Man that's heavy.

Thad,
I think we need pictures! Ok that is thick material to do by hand. Could be done but you might not like the look of the edge. The recommendations on tip and torch settings may be right on. We had a torch cutting bug that followed a line or a pattern. Getting the torch set right and it will do the job on that thick stuff too!

Not sure what you have for a torch, but about any name brand torch out there is capable of cutting up to six inch plate with the proper tip, and the heavy ones will easily go double that, getting a tip for 1 1/4" plate should be a cinch.
