I have looked and looked all over the place for an exhaust for my 1937 WC. But everywhere I go its the same thing. "I don't know what your talking about, do you mean something like a stack?" No, I am talking about the 45 degree, little pipe, with the end flared and squeezed flat. I even went to AGCO,down here Massey Ferguson, and they did have it in their parts diagram but were unable to order it saying that "they no longer serviced that part." So do any of you guys know where I could locate this exhaust pipe at. I've seen too many before and afters of WC's in which one works it's way on to the after picture that was nowhere to be seen in the before one.

Find a piece of exhaust pipe that fits the manifold. Cut it to length and hammer the end down to suit.

why did they flatten the end ? the B/C underhood muffler is flattened too. Does it help quiet it down ?

Reducing the area of the source does reduce noise level somewhat. So it would be a very minimal 'muffler'. I run the pipe full open on a 37 and it has quite a bark.

Don't worry about it. The sound of an open manifold actually appeals to me but now it seems others will have to get used to it ;)
My 1991 Dodge Ram ran with open headers for a while, I liked it but the hearing loss that came with it made us finally hook the exhaust back up. Edited by AllisChalmers37 - 28 Aug 2010 at 9:07pm |

AC37: My son made mine from a piece of scrap pipe someone had discarded from an old swimming pool ladder. I believe it's stainless steel. I think there's enough left for you to make one, if you want it? Drop me an Email, and I'll send it to you free. Someone here had sent me a set of AC tractor Christmas lights, so it's only fair to 'pass it on forward'!

Fred, that was just MEAN! LOL! Teasin the boy like that was just wrong! 37, If you want the pipe to look stock, do what AC did and Charlie recommends. Take a piece of exhaust pipe that fits over the snout on the manifold and flatten the end of it. A bench vice with a thick rag or piece of leather around the jaws works perfect. it will squeeze it flat and the wrapping will not leave any tooth marks on the pipe. Personally, I would go with a short straight pipe with a bend to put it in the upright position. Look good, make noise!

Try your NAPA store. We bought a muffler just like you are describing at NAPA auto parts store 10 years ago for our WC. It is not a pipe like in the picture shown, I would guess the body of the muffler is around 8" oval with 6" of pipe at each end which slides into the 45 degree angle riser off the exhaust manifold. Good luck...

When the aftermarket underhood muffler didn't fit my IB, (hood clearance) I took a short piece of straight exhaust pipe, cut it to the approx. length that it looked correct through the hood once stuffed in the exhaust manifold, and crunched the end in a vice with a couple blocks of wood. Viola! One underhood straight pipe. Actually, its not to loud in second gear pullin' the finish mower, but that little bugger barks in first gear with a load on it. That same muffler that didn't fit under the hood of the IB, actually fit quite nicely under the hood of the RC. The higher hood clearance on the RC gave plenty of air space between the hood and muffler than it did for the IB. Didn't want to burn the new paint off on the IB. Good paint is to expensive these days....

I always thought that the reason for the exhaust pipe being squeezed off was to cause the proper amount of back pressure. If this squeezing was to make the engine quieter why did they squeeze the pipe on the underhood mufflers. If I remember my lessons from GM tech school all engines are disigned to run with a certain amount of back pressure.
