Fellows, before I fly off the handle, did ANY WD45’s come with a straight shifter? I know some WD’s came with a curved shifter at the end of production, but these people that advertise as a WD45 and it has a straight shifter bothers me..unless I am incorrect??

Look closer. Check the serial number. Check and see if it has a tall head.

tall head, air cleaner is bigger(WD45), plate on the engine (WD), according to the books I have no -45's with straight shifter, although, as you point out, some WD's came with curved shifter. SN's don't lie

The first WD45 is 146607. All 45’s had a curved shifter. WD’s after 127007 (if that’s not the exact number it’s close) had curved shifters.

Be easy enough to put a WD45 engine in a WD,since the transmission wasn't the deciding factor because what were called WD tractors came with both transmissions. The motor apparently was the deciding factor on whether it was a WD or a WD45.Put WD internals in a WD45 block then what is it called?

I have a crooked shifter '53 WD that looks like it has a straight shifter on it after the old one wore out and somebody cobbled together a repair (has worked good for 15 years tho). So maybe it was a repair job? But yeah, S/N and such will tell the story.

Chassis serial # won't tell what motor is in it or what internals are in the motor. D17 motor in a WD/WD45 chassis Super WD45 or WD52 Super?

Just about a year ago I went to look at a tractor on Craigslist advertised as a WD45, no pictures. It was only about 10 miles away so I drove over to see it. Straight shifter. I said it was a WD, not a 45, seller asked why did I say that, I pointed to the shifter and explained. He said, "Are you kidding me?!?! Wait here, I'll go get a piece of pipe and BEND it fer ya!!!" lol... No, I didn't buy it.

"I'LL get a piece of pipe and bend it for you"... Yea. Origional curved shifter means theres helical cut gears in the transmission, bending the shifter won't change that, nor will it change the knob on top....straight sticks were thread curved had the slip on rubber knob... And the knob that thinks he can make it a 45 by bending it is just a fool that is trying to cheat you. yea, When those WD's & WD45's were made, now going on 60-80. years ago, lots can change. Seen a WD45 that had a WD engine block put in... Seen a D19 that had a WC engine put in... had a big loader on the tractor and was used for loader work. Fellow really liked it that way.

lol, yes I know... he was being a jerk, got mad that I decided to pass on a WD that he was selling as a WD45. He didn't see that it made any difference. He knew nothing about it, or Allis Chalmers, or anything about tractors in general for that matter. He inherited it from a relative and was looking to make a quick buck.

And that would turn it into a WD, with a curved shifter, straight cut gears, and broken shift forks... ![]() Yep, there's lots of variables, and seein's how the parts were very swappable, AND that when a machine was broken down in a field, if all they could get on short-notice was one thing... they'd use it... or of the other part was a 'better' part, they'd use that... Heck, I've seen a WC with a Buick 455 engine... did that make it an WC Electra Estate? (at 500+ ft-lbs, I'm thinkin' it made it a likely scene for clutch and transmission failure...

Fact is most farmers 50 years ago saw a tractor as a machine to get the job done. And why not? Not 1 penny was gained by them to keep something original just the opposite really a modification to make it more useful or work better for them were the things of value. I'll change something on a machine in a heartbeat if it helps me get the job done now better/easier/cheaper,couldn't care less if some collector 30 years after I'm gone has a hissy fit over it or not.Can say for sure there are a couple tractors that started life as a WD45 that now have WC/WD engines because I made the swap to build WC pullers.

Thanks to all for confirming what I thought. Really bothers me that there are people out there trying to make extra cash because of a $4 decal which changes nothing.

On the note of swapping internals, pull a plug and roll the engine over to see how much stroke there is with a piece of wire from top dead center, 4" or 4.5".

I see ads for alice chalbers for sale. These folks feel real proud when they figured out how the flip over seat works. They really don't know anything about Grandpas tractor. I heard two stories about folks selling their tractor because it would not move. The buyers came, paid the guy, started the tractor, pulled the hand clutch in, loaded and left.

Lon, I could see how that could happen in this day and age. Good true story! As far as the serial number goes. My uncle changed out the rear end in a straight shift 1950 WD due to some problem. It was still a straight shift WD but now had a rear end with newer serial number, that says it is a 1952. Swapping parts is/was pretty common too. I guess buyer beware, and more important buyer be informed! Regards, Chris

Chris Holmes at Elkwood VA had an AC dealership he used to build lawnmower tractors with Woods mowers out of B,C,CA,D10 and D12 tractors using different combinations. No two tractors were ever the same,I've had a few calls over the years from people buying them and trying to figure out what they had(LOL).Serial number on those were next to useless trying to figure things out.
