Had the hay rolled at the farm last Thursday. Apparently a roll of hay went into the smaller pond, just runoff water no spring feed. Yesterday I found it, killed most of the fish in pond. Hooked a chain around it, it was in 3 foot of water. Pulled it out, water had a real dark color to it. Hay roll stank just like cow piss and manure. It real messed up thing quick. I would not have thought it would have been as bad or quick. Tracy

Same as when someone kills their pond weeds. The dead weeds start to decay and there is no photosynthesis going on to produce oxygen. The bale could have clouded the water enough to kill the water plants which resulted in the fish kill. Thanks.

Wasn't any pond vegetation in this pond. Just water and fish.

I think what happened was the hay rotted very quickly and caused deoxygenation in the pond. That would account for the color of the hay, the smell and the fish loss. Just my guess.
