I noticed my new to me CA had an empty hole in the grill shell by where the headlight mounts. I didn't know what it was for until I went to an antique tractor show in St. Ignace/Mackinac last weekend and saw another CA there that had shutters behind the grill to close off the rad for cold weather use.
Are these still available and are they worth trying to find? Did all the CA's come with them, or was it an option? Thanks.

No, I didn't have my tractor there Ken. I just got it home that weekend.
I didn't get to see the bridge crossing because I am always working. I heard there was almost 1400 tractors that crossed! I guess you have to join one of the clubs to be able to be in the crossing. I still have to research it more.

I do not have grill shutters on my 57 CA.
It has 4 smaller holes to install a canvas that would block the air flow to heat up the engine in the cold of winter. this was stored in my tool box along with the spark plug wrench and tire lug wrench. DeWayne |

This was my first crossing. I drove a CA and a nephew drove his WC. Yes you need to belong to a tractor club I joint one just so we could drive the Big Mac. I heard that that was 1450 in the tractor count. When you are part of the parade you really don't see too much. Didn't look like there were many AC tractors. Already looking at next year.

Someone with more knowledge can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the older tractors that were not equipped with a thermostat had the shutters. As was said above, they were designed to shut of f air to bring the operating temperature up in cooler weather.
The newer tractors had a thermostat, so there was no need for shutters.

in addition to what has been said about the thermostat, there were also distillate tractors, which run better, hotter...

I think I may have seen you guys Ken, on Saturday. Mu son and I were walking our way over to you as you were driving out towards where the trucks and haulers were parked but then we lost you. Finally found the tractors but no one was around.
Hopefully get a chance to talk to you in person next year. I guess they made changes through the run and they didn't all come with the shutters then? I noticed in the parts catalogs they have pressurized and pressurized systems. I haven't had time to look and see if mine has a thermostat as i have been out of town, but i do know it has a pressure cap on it when I got it.

If you have a pressure cap and no shutters, I'm betting you have a thermostat (or at least the housing for a thermostat).
