The hourmeter on my Hindu Ford (Farmtrac 35) quit working several months back, it is part of the tachometer which still works, mechanically driven by a cable. I don't want to spend the $$$ to replace the whole instrument cluster but would like to get a separate meter to track engine hours. Any suggestions on what would work or what might fix the existing unit? Thanks in advance.

Try Surpluscenter.com, they usually have 12V hour meters, cheap.

Hubert there is a place called Nichols Speedometer in Greensboro NC that might can repair it for you. I have taken dash clusters from Ford super dutys to them and I always have had good service from them. Give them a call and if I need to do anything for you let me know. I talked to them about rebuilding a Sun tach that is 40 years old and they said they could.

any auto parts store usually has the hour meters too. if you ever do replace the whole thing, keep it so you can show all hours it does have!

As for Dave's idea,I have run the electric on old Cat's. I put a T in the line to oil pressure gauge and put a pressure activated electric switch in. You have oil pressure and your hour meter is running.

Thanks, Dave. If I can find a place to fit it I will get the rectangular unit.
Ray, the tee in the oil line is a great idea, the only problem is that this thing only has an idiot light that has already cost me a crank shaft. I might just plumb in an oil pressure guage also.

Well Hurbert you can never be to carefull. My cousin farmed with AC HD5's and HD9's. Had a operator that saw the oil pressure needle on a 9 drop off to 0,he shute it down and saved the engine. The oil pump shaft had broken,so a easy fix.
But that prompted him put a old car radio in the sun shade canopy and a set of headphones so you could kind of hear the radio on a open crawler. All wired through the oil pressure switch so no pressure no radio. I drove that thing for a day and was not to impressed but he insisted I had to use headphone even though I am a cowboy hat guy instead of a cap as he likes. I do believe he has given up on the whole idea by now. But he may wish he had kept it working too.
