 Topic: B starter conversion

I thinking about converting my B starter to a solenoid button start and adding voltage regulator to get rid of the cut out relay. Any one have a simple wire layout? Thanks.

Suitable circuits would probably show in the CA manual: http://geraldj.networkiowa.com/Trees/Allis-Chalmers-G-B-C-CA-Service.pdf and in the appropriate section of the WC manual also in 10 pieces in that same Trees directory. The voltage regulator includes a cutout relay but is a step forward in battery care. There are two ways a generator field can be wired, and the voltage regulator has to be correct for the generator field wiring to work at all. Gerald J.

I get the voltage regulator. I don't so much get the starter solenoid. Added complexity without a benefit in my book. A lot of people seem to have done it, though.

I have both the old OE contact switch and some that have been converted to solenoid. The only thing I will say is that it is a lot easier to open up the contact switch and clean the contacts that it is when there is a solenoid problem.

are you switching to 12 volts or retaining the 6 volt ? Voltage regulator is a good improvement for the battery life... Alternator and 12 volts is even better.

I have a B that has been converted. The way I bought it. It's still 6v. I hate the cut out and light switch. Mine is kinda all apart right now but if I can i will try to come up with a diagram for the wiring.

Frankly if you're going 1/2 the distance, might as well go all the way. Convert to 12V, neg ground and put an alternator on. You should replace 100% of the existing wiring anyway,alternators are cheap or free, 12v allows easy jump starting and cheap addons like lights,radio and winch. Overall the 'complete conversion' might cost you $10-$20 more.

If your system is still 6V, a VR is a nice addition to the system for better charging and current usage. Adding a Starter Sol. aids in Starter longevity due to voltage drop and also more current to the Starter for quicker cranking power. If moving to 12V's, we offer a nice conversion that gives you everything needed to do the deed. Drop by our website and check out of conversions. I also include step by step wiring instructions along with a color coded CAD wiring diagram. Also offer an optional Alternator mounting bracket if you don't want to fab your own... Steve@B&B
