Well,,I knew that eventually this was gonna happen,,,,and now it has. When we do the Transfers, especially from bed to wheel chair,,,it puts one heck of a strain on ole Joe's weak back,,,!! We had several "discussions" about her helping me get her up, and off the bed onto wheelchair,,,,well,,I'm now down with my back and can't hardly use my left leg, The big muscle right under the left butt cheek and on down the back of my leg is kinda swelled up and very PAINFUL. I have'nt been able to get around much the last couple pf days, it so sore,,,,,,
I'm thinkin, I must of pulled that muscle pretty bad. Been feeding it lots of 600 Mg Gabapentin, just to get by. I was going to put an icepack on it but wife says it should have a HEAT pad,,,,,any semi Doctors on here,,,,??

ice pack for 10-15 minutes(what you can endure). to reduce the imflamation(sp) aka sweling) say once every hour.
heat is good, but after the swelling goes down.
I have 'tennis elbow' and doc's been using 'laser' on it. It's actuall Far Infrared Radiation (FIR in the trade) .well I made my own 'laser', Ain't as fancy but works the same. FIR gets the energy(heat) down deep into the arm (or leg) unlike a heating pad, which heats the surface and  eventually goes in a bit.
Please find a 'personal lift' or whatever they call the 'engine hoist for humans' !! I've seen them on Kijiji up here(Cl for Canucks..) very cheap(new they're $$$ !). You NEED one of them PDQ otherwise you get hurt, can't help the better half.

I’m so sorry to read this. You will have to take care of yourself as well as her. Prayers being sent for you both.
Hot for me. Cold never worked. I fill the bathtub full of very hot water to get myself moving quite. Often.
Jenn filled a sock with rice and sewed it shut. Microwave it and it makes an awesome heat pad.

Those more expert than I tell me hot and cold. Which makes some sense your trying to relax the muscle. So like metal most of us are familiar with, expand and contract with hot and cold.

Others are giving good advice about getting some mechanical help doing the lifting. Hoyour(spelling) lift is the fancy name but a clever guy could do it with that high dollar Harbor Freight equipment Wink.

looks like a good start... you need the 'sitting -in-sling' though.
if you google 'patient lift' you'll see lots of them
used ones here go for $500 and up, new is $$$$$$$$$!!!!!

though kinda 'ugly', a gantry crane with chain hoist might be easier ?

just thinking out loud

DJ you better get an attorney right quick. Maybe you can sue yourself and get some mighty fine equipment. Not really, I hope you just pulled something a little to much and hot, cold and emu oil brings you relief. We really do need your jokes on here when you feel better.

I see you posted as I wrote this. I'm glad to hear it's not a herniated disk.

Joe, you take care of yourself so you can take care of your loving wife. As has already been said you need to get some type of lift system before you really do your back in. Have you checked to see if "Mediscare" will help out? Might have to get the docs to push that for you.

Hi DJ.
Here's some input for you.
Hot and cold application could be done via a shower, too. Just turn the water on slow over the area.
Incorporate calcium into your diet via yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. and anything else with a high calcium content as calcium relaxes the muscles.
You could also just get a calcium/magnesium supplement from the health food store.
The magnesium relaxes the nerves.
If one is having trouble going to sleep at night, taking this supplement before going to bed will pretty much drop you off and you'll rest better.
Also, sleeping in a North/South position will give one better rest as the body isn't fighting the magnetic pull of the earth's N/S poles while you're sleeping.
Something else, pick up a whey protein supplement to get started rebuilding the muscle tissues. I saw some at Walmart in the big cans for about $18,here.
Another point, be drinking apple juice, grape juice, cranberry juice to get the kidneys working to help flush the body of any lactic acid in the muscles.
What I like to do is to mix Bragg's ACV with the apple and grape juice to help heal and relieve the muscle and joint pain.
"About" 2 tblspns in a 16oz glass and then fill it up with juice.
ACV is a natural pain reliever.
You can also do this: drink Ocean Spray white grapefruit juice, (half gal. a day or so) - it'll be next to the Ruby Red in the store -  OR -- cut up and liquify in a blender a whole grapefruit a day and drink it for the day ( add water to top of pitcher) for a week as this will clean out the lymphatic system which is one of the body's drain systems for carrying away toxins from the cells.
If this isn't decently clean, the body recycles the toxins which allows the body to get sick easier.
Also, I'd strongly suggest to visit a chiropractor and have them get your physical structure, joints and muscles, balanced back up top to bottom.
If your neck and lower back lumbar region is aligned and squared up, both legs will be the same length.
If not, that's one aspect of not being squared up and centered and you'll be putting more stress on and in other areas.
Think of a 2-3 story house. If it's foundation isn't as strong and supported and squared like it can and needs to be, then the rest of the framework built on top of that will have weak and stress points to fail later on.
Also, make sure that your arches and ankles are aligned. Install an arch support if need be as it'll "shift" the body's vertical structure as your feet will hit the ground "differently", but for the better.
In the course of everyday life, when mishaps happen, the impact on oneself won't be as hard as it would be if we weren't aligned and squared up structurally.
I know about this because I was "flat footed" until I made that correction and afterwards, I had a better "sense" of balance.
You'll find that when your body is aligned like it's supposed to be, you'll be stronger and can think easier, given enough rest daily.
That's all that I can think of for now off of the top of my head. HTH.

I find I like eating 2 soft fried eggs (low heat) with a whole grapefruit for breakfast...
And from time to time, I squeeze a lemon and add into a half gallon bottle of water and try to drink that during the day.

and "Ocean Spray white grapefruit juice," isn't that just some 'made from concentrate' thinned out?

Being "aligned" is pretty important... Got a retired chiro that when he works on you, he gives you a foot to head adjustment. setting the foundation back up so your body has a chance to heal easier... Lot of new chiros ask where you hurt... and then they work only on that one area... Find a good chiropractor.

Thanks Jim for advice/thoughts you share.

Shameless,
Can you drink sweet tea?
If you're diabetic, probably not, unless you drink it sparingly.
I'm not recalling seeing anything of you being a diabetic.
I have recipe for home made kombucha tea.
The same kind that one buys in a store for $3/pint. That's $24/gallon
I make anywhere from 6-10 gallons a week when I'm drinking a lot of it as it tastes just that good.
This "brew" is a liver detoxifier/cleanser.
And it does make one pee well.
If anyone would like it, I'll post it.

LIVER CLEANSER/DETOXIFIER

In short, it's sweet tea made with brown sugar, pure maple syrup and 12+- ozs. Bragg's ACV.
No white sugar.

If you're diabetic, adjust the drinking as needed or adjust the amount of sugars added.
Sample it first to see your response to it and go from there.

For 1 gallon batch. 5 small tea bags.

Use glass or SS to steep the tea. No aluminum or teflon.

Very clean is the name of the game here.
Use Wood or SS spoon to mix/stir the sugars in the warm tea.

Steep 5 small bags of black tea in a half gallon of water. Lipton is what I use.
I'll usually steep/boil for 30 minutes or so and let it sit for an hour or more to get everything out of it and cooled down somewhat. Bigger pots take longer.

Have 2 cups of brown sugar and 2 tablespoons of pure maple syrup in a wide mouth gallon jar for easy dissolving when pouring in the warm tea. Stir to dissolve.

Fill up to about 3 qts and make sure that the temp of the tea is room temp or cooled down enough that you can hold your finger in it without getting burned so that you don't kill any ACV bacteria when you add it.

Shake ACV bottle to suspend the mother and sediment and add a minimum of 12 ozs. to the sweet tea. Stir with wood or SS spoon to mix.

Fill with water to just where the widest part starts narrowing for maximum air exposure.

Cover with cheese cloth or a clean tea towel as lintless as possible, and,
Place out of direct sunlight for 7 days.

On the 7th day, wash and clean your hands extremely well right before you pull the tea. I do some dishes with Palmolive/Dawn to get rid of any oil and dirt film and clean under the fingernails. Make sure any rings are very clean or remove them.

You "should" have a mushroom on top of the tea.
Don't be alarmed or worried as it just as organic as they come and safe.
If you have spots on it, don't worry about them either.
Just wash them off before placing in the dish.
If it's a blue green "splotch", that's penicillin.
If you ingest that accidentally, just eat yogurt, cottage cheese, etc, to replace the beneficial bacteria in your digestive tract.

That mushroom is a LIVE organism from the interaction of the acid in the tea and the acid in the vinegar. That interaction result is called symbiosis.
You can now use your hands and fingers to reach in the jar and lift that mushroom out and place it in a large Pyrex casserole dish.
Pay attention to which side is up and down.
The lighter side goes up when you make the next batch.

Now you can pour off the top 3+ qts into glass pitcher/container(s).
Save 12+ ozs in the bottom.
Do not use/store in a plastic tea pitcher as this tea will now leach the chemicals out of the plastic.

The 12+- ozs. that you saved is now the catalyst for the next batch instead of the ACV.

Swirl it around to suspend the sediment and pour it in the dish with the mushroom.

OR, pour it straight into the next gallon jar of tea that will be setting for a week while you drink this tea.
After you pour the catalyst into the next tea batch, place the mushroom on top of the tea, light side up.
If you're making 2 gallons this time, just add the ACV to the other gallon.

The reason for room temp or very cooled down sweet tea is that the hot temperature of the liquid will kill the live bacteria and mushroom.

Pull this tea in 7 days or it will start becoming very strong vinegar.
You'll also notice that it has grown a new mushroom on the bottom.
Other people call these a scoby.

Here's what happens:
The mushroom lives off of the sugars in the tea.
It changes the caffeine content into a chemical substance that our bodies utilize.
There is now very little caffeine in it compared to when made. 100% > .5-1% +-
This tea will now clean your liver, which is a filter of the body, and if I'm not mistaken, the only organ that can regenerate itself by growing new cells and tissues/lobes.
It will also balance out your body's Ph, too.

Sidenote: don't fret if you don't get a mushroom the first time on this.
You got the ingredients together in the tea.
It's still ok to drink it as it will still work.
On the next batch, add 16ozs. of tea/catalyst.

Back 20 + years ago when I was first told about how to make it, I was up to 15 gallons a week and getting it all drank. It was just that good and tasty.
Back then, I was a whole lot more active outside, too, and skinny as a rail.
You'll be hard pressed to make 1 gallon last a week.
I had mushrooms up to 2 inches thick as I made and used them every week.

If you'll be a few days before making the next batch, add a tblspn of sugar to the saved tea and mushroom to live on until you get the next batch going, hopefully, within the week.
They can be transferred to another jar to keep so as to not tie up the dish.

What I usually do, when I have the time planned for it, is to have my next round of sweet tea already made and cooled down in jars before I start pulling the tea that's ready in order to save time and I can just pour the catalyst tea right in the ready made tea, put the mushroom on it, and set it on the shelf to be making while I drink down this batch all week.
Also, sometimes the mushroom will float and others sink. I don't know why.
Also interesting is that when I make these 8-10 gallons at the same time, I'll have them in the fridge and as I get to drinking each one, I've noticed a little bit different flavor. Again, I don't know why but it's really, really good when it's super cold.
I also like to sample each jar when I pull it, albeit, it's room temperature warm.
That's an interesting flavor, too.

Another sidenote: I may have noted this before, but pure maple syrup quenches your hunger cravings for awhile.
So, while drinking this, I don't get hungry unless I'm expending a lot of energy and when I drink it then, it keeps me hydrated and gives me an energy boost without the jitters.
Even of a morning after getting up, I noticed that it seems to perk me and get me going sooner and I don't need coffee to help it along.
If you can find the book called The Essential Kombucha, I'd suggest adding it to your library as it lists a lot of health benefits.
Now I'm thirsty. I need to go get some.
This can almost take the place of adult beverages!! Big smile
