My Dream Tractor

Its pretty cool, but an 8V would have been alot cooler than just a plain ol' 6-71. 

the 238 still sounds good , like the sound . The HD17 I seen out in western MN with the 8V-71 looked like a nice machine also.  Sometimes you go with what you got and if they had a 6-71 laying around why not use it. Like the 2-71 I have that is looking for a new owner, would be great in WC I figured.

I think you guys are plain nuts.  Dad had an 8V-71 Cab over KW.  Nothing more than I wanted to do that shoot that ($)%# thing for making so much noise and leaking so much oil.  Only good side to it compared to every thing else was that parts were dirt cheap, but of course it loved the oil, at least a gallon for a good days run. 

When I left the farm and joined the military I thought I was done with them screamers.  Only to my dismay that all of the support equipment was powered by 6-71's, 4-53's, and 6v-53's.  Always did get a good chuckle watching someone try to start one with the air door closed.  They would go to get someone from the support equipment mechanics and I would have it running when they got back;)

that is wicked cool! sounds like he is upshifting more than just a power-director. 

You know, I not trying to make you change colors or anything, but Oliver had a 3-71 option in their Super 99. 80 HP, torque converter, 6 speed.

Detroit is one helluva motor - its a fuel hog, but makes up for that by having higher rpm & a much broader power band - meant fewer gears were needed for some tasks. A military surplus Huber Warco road-grader we had at the airport worked its arse off every day and would lug down far better than the 4-stroke diesels. All it had was 4 forward gears - but you could pick just about any one of them and throttle down to a crawl and back up without ever hitting the clutch.

I only ever saw one Oliver in my neck of the woods where I grew up - a kid down the road had one that was gas start/kerosene run & was caught numerous times stealing gas and broke down on the side of the road. Seems he never figured out that manifold would cook the gas once it got hot & kerosene by that time was hard to come by.

Nowadays, in the Thumb area of Michigan, I see Olivers all over the place.

My dream tractor won't be fitted with a Detroit, otherwise it sounds good. But my number one will be a D21 fitted with a V8. Sad that Allis didn't made that from factory, just like IH and Oliver did.
