when i have my plow hooked to the tractor and it's in the up position and tractor is idling and clutch is out..i hear a knocking or tapping in the trans...i was told it's the pump bypassing...if i clutch the tractor or idle up a little it goes away...is this normal or a problem?  hydraulics seem to work good and normal

That's pretty normal. I don't know if it is the pistons in the pump knocking or if it is the unloader spool hammering, but is nothing to worry about.

My CA does that, but if I put the lever in hold position after the blade is raised, it stops

Jeff...

... does this mean you found the source of the original "noise"?

That is some primitive hydraulics by todays standards.   Its likely just not sealing somewhere and running ever so slightly to keep pressure.  Mine does the same thing.

I think Max nailed it; if the lever is not moved back to the hold position after the rams reach their maximum lift, the hydraulic system is recycling oil thru the unloader valve and will sometimes make that kind of a sound. I have one WD-45 that "knocks" like that much more than either my other WD-45 or the WD, but they all do it to some extent.
