Potato Digger questions

   Hello, 
We have a one row McCormick Deering Potato Digger with a PTO driven chain and all manual controls for the bed (no hydraulics) 
It is an offset drawbar pull and this has been a constant frustration for us, the digger has a habit of pulling to the side and not following behind the tractor in a straight line. 
The drawbar has already been removed as it was twisted beyond repair last season when the digger caught itself on a rock and stopped much faster than the tractor pulling it did. 
I am considering fabricating a straight drawbar on the digger and then fabricating a drawbar that can offset 16" for the tractor (AC 160) 
Does anyone see any problems with this approach or have a better way to rebuild this digger, the entire digger weighs less than 1000# so I've also considered making a three point mount for it as long as the PTO shaft wouldn't be in the way.

	Why offset it? Pull it straight behind the tractor like all the horse drawn ones where.

	If your tractor has a three point hitch, I would get a three point drawbar for the tractor (a bar that attaches between the two bottom links with a number of holes in it) and hook your digger to that. You can then pull the digger directly behind the tractor and better yet, you can very easily control digging depth. That's how it's done with modern harvesters in our potato area.
