 Topic: Grille guard for pickup

I bought a new truck and I like to put grille guards on my pickups. I always used Ranch Hand guards in the past. This last one I bought for my previous truck rusted pretty quick. The headache rack and box rails from them rusted quickly as well. If anybody uses grille guards, what other brands did you use and how did you like them? I was thinking to try a Westin this time to see if they stand up better.

rusted ??? probably krappy powder coat ! Worst 'covering' that was ever invented. I've yet to see ANY PC steel that wasn't rusted because of it. I've seen NEW riders and trailers with less than 3-4 months and they're already rusty ! Neighbour made his out of stainless steel..man is it purdy !!

Jay B Miller, I agree that powder coat is not all it is cracked up to be. I noticed the bed rails had sharp corners where the paint started cracking. I dismounted the rack and rails and ran a grinder along to round it out before repainting. The new truck will get an aluminum headache rack in black paint. Although I love the look of an Ali-Arc on a Kenworth, I am not crazy about the look on a pick up. I think I will try the Westin and see how it does.

I will have to ask my dad next time I talk to him but he put a chrome one on his Ford Ranger and has tested it on 2 deer so far with no damage to the truck. Looks sharp chrome on a silver truck

hmm. what kind of paint REALLY sticks GREAT to aluminum ?
Before you buy, ask for 2-3 buyers of the rack so you can see just HOW it has stood up. everything looks preety in the showroom but after a few bugs hit it, a stone or two, a powerwasher,the blazing summer sun.... THEN have a look see.
now you can anodize aluminum THAT is far better than any paintjob I've seen

Hello Jay: The one I was thinking was the DeeZee octagon style. I see a lot running around the oilfields. I will have to take note of the paint condition on the painted ones.

My son built me a 5 X 10 trailer about 15-18 years ago and he had it powder coated and it has stood the test of time. And it sits outside. The fenders were not powder coated and I used Rust-oleum primer, topped with satin black, they are really starting to fade, but no rust on that trailer.

The problem I see with powder coat,at least up here, is that once the plastic( powder coat is a plastic) gets a split or cut in it, water gets in,underneath and rusts the steel,pushing a gap between the rusty steel and the powder coat. The more water, the more rust, the worse it gets. Add some salt (AKA winter roads) and well I've seen 4 year old Snow Bear trailers in the scrapyard ! Cub Cadet rider ,less than 80 hours and the deck is 'gnarly'. PITA to try to fix,can't paint it ,best to sandblast off and start 100% fresh.
I'll assume pros do a proper 'metal conditioning' and use 'industrial' rated powder coat but everything I see up here is K-r-a-p. ANY sharp corner where the PC is thin, scratch it and poof..rust appears very soon.

Jay, I see the same thing here with aftermarket powder coating... 5 years and it starts to flake off........... I have never had a lot of luck painting aluminum. BUT.. My 2002 FORD truck has aluminum running boards painted black and they still look pretty good after 16 years... never thought about that much until you brought up painting aluminum. ... maybe a proper etching

I agree with Jay...why paint aluminum? it looks good all by itself. powder coating is worthless in our part of the country, lucky to get 1-2 years out before it starts rusting. now...I do have a 1958 aluminum run about 14 ft boat that was painted at the factory (lund) and all the paint is still on it. it sits outside all year round since new. wonder what they used on it way back then? what ever it was, it's prolly illegal now.

IF I was to paint aluminum, I'd clean super good, the etch it (phos acid or sandblast) ,rinse very well, then use an epoxy paint( Black baron spray epoxy from RC hobby shop). With any paint job, especally aluminum, it's 99.44% PREP, paint is the easy step.
