Gary was a good man, when he was well he was willing to help anyone, and was a productive member of society. Unfortunately, Gary suffered from depression most of his life, in fact most of his family seems to suffer from depression, but Gary was the only one that was severe enough to be institutionalized several times. The Dr's could help him for awhile with various therapies, and drugs, but nothing ever seemed to be long term. He always felt inferior, he never felt good enough. Who knows the depths and dark places of the human mind? It's hard for us to understand or relate to. I have spoke to Gary when he seemed absolutely normal, he even held a job with the county, doing visitation/check up with mentally ill that the county deemed able to function on their own. then he would take a nosedive, in a matter of a day or two. He tried to explain to me how he felt, but words but there are no words.
Gary was released from the hosp a week ago from one of his relapses. He was last seen last Wednesday. When he couldn't be accounted for, his family reported him missing. Police had his apartment opened, but he wasn't there. His phone was found in collage campus area of Pittsburgh a couple of days later and then two or three days ago his car was found in a nearby park. Gary was found yesterday by a family member looking for him in the park, he had apparently jumped from a bridge. I'm pretty sure Gary new the Lord, his family can all take some comfort in that. Keep his family in prayer, that they can find some peace in all this. For over forty years Gary fought and struggled with this illness.....the battle is over now |

I am still confident of this;
I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. Ps 27 |

Prayers to you Lou and Gary's family. The peace to be found in this situation is that now Gary is free and is at peace. You are right no one knows what Gary was going through and it sounds to me like you tried to do all you could do as a friend but sometimes the demons are too much.

Thank you Thomas. Gary had lots of friends and family that tried to support him, my part was one small part, but the problem was bigger than any of us. He joined our men's Bible study quite often, and he would speak openly about it, we all would offer our best efforts, but it just wasn't enough this time

PEACE be with you, Lou,, and Dave's family more so. It's so hard to live with those thoughts that are in a person's mind ,, and there are those that just cannot cope with those thoughts that eventually drive them to want to end it all. My youngest Brother decided to end his life when he was in his early 20's and left a wife and 2 young sons. I felt guilty for the longest time because I did not see what he was going thru to maybe help him. It's hard,,Lou,,,and I'm with you,,,, |

prayers to all involved with Gary. I've seen this so much thru my years in law enforcement, and it really SUCKS! I've had friends the same way too that are now in peace. seems there are no amount of words that can really help them, they usually just nod their heads, but it really never soaks in or helps. just best to keep your eyes on them while you are together and be a pal if needed at the time! that will buy you/them more time in the long run.

Lou, prayers for you, Gary's family, and all that knew him. Take comfort that he knew the Lord and is at peace now. It is hard to know what is going on in a person's head and at times all you do is not enough.

SO sorry to hear that Lou peace be with you and the family... ... many have demons that get into the mind and drive them crazy ... sometimes to near destruction, sometimes beyond. So sad to watch that happen. Sometimes all that is needed is to ask Jesus into your heart to fill the voids... and to heal your heart too.

Our neighbor ended his life about a year after his wife died. He would visit her grave every day and we assume he just wanted to be with her. Sad.

Sorry to hear this. Prayers for family and friends.
Just a few years ago, I drove my 82 year old neighbor to the ER . I knew the guy all my life and used to baby sit his 2 boys when I was a teenager. He had fought off prostate cancer for 15 years or so and evidently, it came back with a vengeance. I mowed his yard for him several times in the next month and knew at times he was feeling down, but always put on a good front when I was there. The last time I mowed the yard on a Thursday, he seemed to be in great spirits. His wife even mentioned it later, but no one recognized the fact that he had made up his mind what he was going to do. Friday morning he went to the garage and put a shotgun in his mouth His stepson was visiting at the time, trying to help them with plans for the their future, and found him right afterwards. Sometimes, the closest ones to this, don't see what may have seemed obvious to someone else. DANG nab it all! |

So sad to hear of all this Lou and Charlie. The mind can do strange things to a person . Unfortunately, we are not mind readers and usually the signs of impending doom are hard to read, even for the the best of trained professionals. He is now at peace and the fact that he knew his Lord and Savior is a plus. May his friends and family find peace and comfort from God's blessings and strength.

With a TERMINAL problem, there should be a SIMPLE - EASY -FIX for these people..( I don't know exactly what that is) -- I know some will not like that comment, but it seems to be a more humane way to me.

Several of our kids friends have went down that path when they were in junior high and high school. Drugs and alcohol were involved in most of them. Just young people. 2 kinds of suicide, the fast way and the slow way.
