Got home from the farm Saturday and turned on the upstairs air conditioner and in a few hours the evaporator coil was a solid sheet of ice so I had to shut it down. And the last few days have set a heat record for this time of year. I have used up all of my R22 and don't want to spend the $$$ to buy a new drum of it so I have got in a call to the heat and air company. This is a 20+ year old heat pump and I have had to recharge it about every other year so I am thinking about biting the bullet and getting a new unit. I can get a $400 rebate from the electric company for a high efficiency unit. Think I should try to get a few more years out of this one or replace it? Thanks in advance.

If you have the area for it go ground source, you will NOT egret it.

Our home is 1800sf main level, about 2/3 that finished lower, heat and cool it with a 7 ton GS Heat Pump. No wells just three five hundred foot laterals 6' under grade.

Herb, your evaporator probably is leaking. time to replace my friend
I am still confident of this;

I am thinking it is a very small leak in the evaporator.

Yep, Lou got it, get a new one.  They have a sealer, but that usually does more damage than the cure.
