What is the best was to remove a steering wheel on a D 17 Series II. I took the nameplate off and the nut loose, tried a three jaw puller but didn't have any luck. Any help would be appreciated.

Had some luck with holding wheel up and tapping the nut firmly with a mallot or hammer if you can hit it square. I should have said first put the nut back on and leave a loose but on far enuf so as not to ruin thread. If that done work I take a small grinder with a fine cutoff blade and start making pieces. If you are trying to save the steering wheel, unfortnately AC didn't make that hardly possible. I'd suggest you drill two or maybe three (you decide) 1/4" holes in the hub and thread them to 1/4" NC and get a steering wheel puller hooked in there and maybe even smack the end of the puller with a hammer and/or use a little torch heat while you have pressure on it. This should be doable but will take some patience getting the holes drilled properly and threaded. Good luck.

Split the nut with a very sharp chisel and rethread the shaft after removal.

I`m with Fred, if all fails, the grinder and a cutoff wheel is the best bet, take your time and you won`t hurt the shaft at all.

Here is the way I save my D series wheels. I take a 3 jaw puller, remove the jaws, take small link chain to wrap around the wheel spokes and bolt in place of jaws. But before that wrap duct tape several wraps around spokes to protect the wheel spokes. It will come off and not hurt the wheel. Dave.
