Changing all the fluids in a friends 8070. Dropped the sump to clean the filter. Found a 3/8” bolt laying in the sump along with what is left of a lock washer. Bolt appears to be broken off, about a 3/4 long and a little beat up. Looking up into the housing I don’t see where it came from. Tractor shifts fine, how worried should he be about this?

Bottom of the transmission, just in front of the drawbar. You remove I think it was 5 bolts, square plate with the sump. Big tube attaches to it. There is a metal pleated filter in there that you can clean. Don’t have a book so terminology may not be correct.

There are six bolts up in the front input high range hollow shaft retainer that are 3/8" X 1.25" long. There are three bolts on the transmission brake at the rear (above where the screen is located) and they are 3/8" X 1.00" long. I would guess it isn't one of the three bolts as they would just fall down to the screen and not get damaged. They could also be replaced (not easily) in chassis after the hydraulic pumps are removed. I can't think of any other place it could have come from, except the front input of the tranny.

Well the bolt could have just broken or snapped off years ago. Hey Doc, is there not some type of trans lube housing on the rear - that's not what you are talking about? - anyway - does the head have marking on it -as to grade 8

Thanks Charlie for answering that question while I was away from the forum. I went out and got the bolt. There is a dash at 12 o’clock 4 o’clock and 8 o’clock. Letters A on the left, S on the right.

If one of them front bolts made it back there without getting in the countershaft, consider it luck! If thats where it came from, you still have 5 and it will probably go a long time with no ill effect. There's a big ball brg there.Been too long.I don't remeber what kind of thrust load there may be on that plate if any.It ain't that hard to split but does take some time and work. You'd have to pull the PD out(HEAVY!!!) to see it then since it's out ,time to reseal it and put a new rear main seal in while there.......then you'll notice the tq/limiter ain't so great and replace it too and probably have flywheel machined LOL...It just goes on and on....but you won't regret it in the end. For jacks for front of cab,I used 1 1/2 pipe lenghts with a foot of 1in redi rod on the floor end,a nut and washer against pipe and redi rod on a chunk of 2 X 4.Cheap,easy and worked well. Move the wheels out before you start so you have room to work in case the tranny has to come out.

Figure out where/how the red fiber stuff would have come from that was on the filter?

Looked like what was left from a shop rag possibly. A small piece of one. Gaskets came in this afternoon, hopefully get them on Friday afternoon and fill her up with fluids.
