Do they need to have the spring inside?

My WD parts book show a spring in the air cleaner hose. If using a soft hose a spring is needed to prevent the hose from being sucked together when throttles is pulled wide open.

I would think if the hose sucks in that would indicate a restriction in the air cleaner.

The older style hoses were SO THIN that they sucked in. The newer ones are thicker. Lots of the older radiator hoses had springs in them, but none of them do anymore as they made them thicker. The older ones you could almost stick your finger through when they were hot. Felt like much. I haven't see one with a spring in it since,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,back in the 60s.
