Working on a 3 point 82R mower my dad purchased new in 1968.
It was put in the weeds several years ago due to constant repair of the knife Bar. 
I dragged it home and am seeing what is needed to run again
The Knife bar is broke close to the head. Looks to have been welded several time.
The knives are rusty but in good condition. Surprising as dad sharpened the heck out of them most of the time and wore them down a lot.
Guards, most of been broke and welded. Looks to be several different kinds on it.
3 of the 9 Top guides (Not sure what their actual name is) are broke.
The Bar Groove has a wear plate that is worn down pretty good. Also looks out of line which was maybe why the bar was binding.
The rest of the mower is OK, Gear box was full, the bearings are tight.

So is it worth fixing for light use? It will mow pastures and such.
Good places for parts? Need a bar, knives, guards, wear plate.
How do I figure out what size he bar groove is? I see 3/4" and 5/8" in the parts book.

I rescued an 82r3 this spring. Take one of the guards to someplace like Tractor Supply and match them with new ones, sounds like you need a whole new sickle. If you get 1 make sure it has what is called chrome sections on it. They are a lot tougher than black steel ones. Tractor Supply should have everything except the sickle bar. You will need wear plates under every sickle hold down bracket, I used bolts to hold the sickle together, that requires a little taller sickle hold down bracket. Bolts are a lot easier for me to use than rivets. Sounds like you will need to replace the hold downs anyway. Good luck with your mower. If you can't find the sickle bar I have seen guys switch ends with them and put the broken end to the outside of the bar.

If sections have ever had a grinder put to them they are never really sharp again.You
can get a better than new/original sickle assembly from Webb's Sickle Service they have a
heavy made all steel head used them for years until I went to NH mowers.I have about
30 Twin Wheel Drive mowers around here suspect you could find some parts on them
plus I have some NOS parts too.Loose/worn bearings on the rear of the arms are the
No. 1 reason the sickle head breaks and No.2 is the bushing where the blade bolts up
has slack in it.All that has to be in really good shape for the mower to work like it should.

I also have many NOS and used parts for those mowers. I know that I have a few NOS knifeheads.
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.

Neighbor recommended changing over to the 1.5" Tiger Teeth blades and Guards.
Opinions?

Reading online they are great in grass, but weeds the 3" are better.

Cutting grown up fields will be what this is used for, or pasture cutting weeds.
