wd45 starter question.

I have a fresh engine that isnt broke in yet with 1/8" oversize bore & flat top pistons. Figure it has 8.25:1 comression. The engine takes 35 to 40 ft. lbs of torque to turn over the engine with the transnmission in neutral with out the spark plugs installed. The starter will not turn the engine over. Ive changed out 2 6vlot  starters and they still wont turn the engine over with out the sparks plugs installed. I wonder if a starter for a diesel engine has more snot or must I crank the engine buy hang unit its broke in.

I can build you a starter that will turn that puppy over, but it ain't gonna be cheap. On occasions, I'll build a starter for one of my pulling customers and they've been very satisfied with the results so far...

Whats a starter like that cost steve? All I know is a stock starter is on the edge of not turning the engine over. Imagine cranking it with the plugs installed. Im almost off the ground cranking it by hand.

 You don't say if the starters were rebuilt or just something on hand that used to work. If a good starter won't turn it over with the plugs out, you got clearance problems in your engine. If you aren't concerned about the rebuild, clean a starter up and at least put new brushes in it. Then pull start the tractor and run it in some.

I have no concerns on my rebuilt. It is fresh never been ran. I only know of this issue because I wanted to prime the engine before I got carried away and fired it.  Whats the difference with a diesel starter??

I just used 12 volts on the starter and it cranked strong. Thats with a 6 volt started that been aboutside for 20 years. I cleaned the brushed with some 1200 grit sand paper.

your stater if its right will start the tractor no special needs just increase the voltage going to it  untill it spins it . when you get up around 28 volts going to the starter the pull switch on the side can be only good for around twenty or so cranks before it causes a promblem . switches are cheap though and the materials they are being produced with are getting flimsy as well. or if you dont want to do that buy a ccw 12 volt high torque bbc mercruiser starter with 2.4 kw coils  and put your armeture and nose piece on it . You can purchase the mercruiser starter from ebay for $125 dollars.

I have my wd starters rebuilt with a 12 volt field coil. no problems so far. but I only have around 8 to 1 in each of them.
