I'm sure this has been discussed before on here, but at about what hp level have pullers found the core of the factory inner cooler to be a restriction in air flow?Our class allows a factory inner cooler, not stand alone aftermarket. Though most are running custom made cores, and mine is in process, just may not get it before season end. I did already make mine single pass as opposed to the original double pass. I've been searching for a gremlin that's been holding it back, so I removed the core and capped the manifold, and it still really didn't change things. I did find the gremlin, and it runs a lot better, but now needs the inner cooler, but don't want to put core back in if other pullers have found it hurts hp output over say 600, 700? I feel it's in the 600 range at the most, but the leaders in my class are pushing 800. This is an A pump, 3000 rpm, 2.36" S300 turbo setup. I'm not too sure my engine needs all 600cc I'm feeding it too lol! Thanks for any input.

Harrison set them up with twin chargers. I am sure you know but the core has to be installed correctly - some came out wrong per a service bulletin. The one we got had a 3/4 pipe fitting drilled into each end fed by two electric pumps - we had to build the container sump.    Slade from Tn had the neatest / cheapest container- a round Igloo cooler screw on top with straps, that I have seen.   Also remember an IH that had sleeves for dry ice and ran antifreeze cause it would freeze the water while waiting in the small container it was told. There were lots of early innovation - including dual intercoolers in the 70's before rules became restrictive and water injection took over.

so in other words, the core may not slow down my air flow as much as I think? I need to put a core back in to get more competitive, since I'm currently the only non intercooled tractor in the class right now. I'll get the core put back in, and work on improving it over the winter.

I don't know Ed, took intercooler to machinist to flow and he said don't bother, looked inside and told me very restrictive.
Did you increase size of crossover pipe????? Made mine 2 1/2 with a mandrel bend,helped wake up engine.

Did your head guy flow your intake ports???? Those things are a pain.

Head is ported, and flow tested. Very impressive low lift numbers, and also gains in max flow, but for a non filled head, about all he was comfortable with. If I would have been thinking, Id sent the intercooler manifold to put on while flowing the head. Like I said before, I was searching for a gremlin, and took the core out in that search. Was not my problem. But since I've found the gremlin, I wonder about the core going back in. My charge pipe is 2.5", and only a foot long, dumps right in the top opening, that I've enlarged a little.

Glad to hear about your head, some guys refuse to port those heads. I spent 60 plus hrs on the intakes alone, ex were a breeze.

What was your gremlin?? If you don't want to say I understand.

put a pressure gauge in on top of the core and another on the bottom... that will tell = you will run less pressure but not drastically less as the cooled air will shrink.. We have checked stock 7080 ' and there will be a 1- 2# drop as the boost increases on a stock unit but not due to pure restriction. The stock intercooler uses about 150-160 degree water to cool the charge.. It is still about a 50 degree drop in temp with this hot water. On a 45# boost the air is HOT

I run a cooler with ice water on my tractor. I made new caps for both ends and left it divided. An inlet and outlet on each end with water running in opposite directions on each side to cool as much as possible and be even across all cylinders.

I ask about that, the answer was the temp of exiting air from front to back was not that much different in tests. Later they had a water injector system with 6 nozzels drilled into the intercooler just below the core. Many units used a hyd cylinder as a reservoir that was pressurized with oil and pushed the water into the nozzels... many innovative ideas back in the 70's

Ran dry ice thru my factory style intercooler mounted on my 21. It helped but not as much as I hoped it would. The water running both ways thru the cooler makes a lot of sense to me.

So I ran 301 with twins with 426 cooler at 95 lbs boost and 1000 hp . Head was filled and gutted for flow . Used an 1 1/2 " feed line into cooler with a 60 gal /min bilge pump 66 qt igloo cooler with 10 gallons water and 60 lbs of ice return was PVC pipe in cooler with holes drilled in it to disperse return water evenly over ice . Still ice left after each pass drain water and add more ice . Also ran 4qts water inj threw Simpson valve with 3 nozzles in piping and 3 more enderlee in inter cooler adapter plate ( these really helped even cylinder temps ) when we chkd restriction we only found 5 lbs difference on each side of inter cooler ! Was able to keep ex temps at 1350 and intake temps were less than 175 ! The more water I pumped threw it the more response we got . Hope this helps , I still have setup if interested , I switched to alky now !
