D17 IV timing problem?

Ok guys got the PTO lever fixed. Changed the plugs and let the cylinders soak in sea foam over night. The smoke problem I had seemed to go away. Father in-law wanted some small squares done for his land lord so I hooked the 17 to the NH 269 and headed his way. It's right at an hour drive with the tractor and the thing ran like a top. I think my carb is a little rich as it puffs black smoke when throttled up fast or pulling up a big hill. Get to his house and went to shut it off and the thing diesels like crazy, leading to a puff of smoke out of the intake. What am I looking at now? Timing issue? Carb issue? Valve issue? Needing guidance please.

Carb is set too rich.

Dieseling from carbon deposits because the carb is too rich.

Thanks guys. I'm not in any way a carb expert. What's the best way to adjust? And do I need to be adjusting the power screw on the bottom or idle screw in top?

Have you checked the air intake, including the air cleaner? The float level could be set too high on the carb as well. I'd buy a carb overhaul kit if the air cleaner and hose are ok.

Thanks gentleman. I'll check that filter in the a.m. I'm assuming the flywheel has timing marks in it?

That happens when the idle is too high on some motors.  Not sure on yours.

Thanks Dave. I'm waiting on a track cable so I'm not positive where the idle is for sure but it sounds really slow. I can try backing it down a touch more
