 Topic: D17 Rear tires

Hi all. I don't post much but read a lot on here. Slowly working on all the little details of my D17 and keep thinking ahead of items to replace or be prepared for. I currently have 16.9-28 on the rears that will need replaced. The original specs call for 14.9-28. If it was up to you, what size would you replace them with? I don't intend to farm with it, just play, parade and plow. I have a 4-14 slat bottom snap coupler for it as well. The 16.9 tires look almost too wide, but I could be all wrong. Just looking for opinions. Thanks! Jay

14.9 is the smallest size offered. 16.9 x 28 was the most common size for D17s. Some of the later ones used 18.4 x 28. I have 16.9 on both of mine and would not go smaller.

All 17's around here have 16.9's.Don't put them scrauny 14.9's on it.

Next time I'm up at the farm I'll take a closer look. I bet the tires on it now are what it throwing me off. They have a lot of sidewall squish with a really small treadbar pattern. I had been thinking on staying with 16.9x28. I'll see if I remember to get a picture

I have a brand new pair of Firestone 16.9x28 SAT 2 bias tires with the stickers still on, never mounted. $950 would buy the pair, if that interests you.

I am assuming all 17's came with the wider rim from factory which fits 16.9 nicely.Mounted on WD45 rims they have sidewall suck.Put a set of 45 rims on dads WD last time it got new rubber.It had 14.9's since early 60's and stock rims weren't ideal.

I have a friend with a low hr D-17 IV and when he put new 16.9 x 28 rubber on it three years ago the rims were 13 inches wide. It had 16.9's on it....seems a little narrow to me, but that's what it was.

Digging through my D17 parts book it looks like the standard tire was 14.9 with 16.9 being optional and later on 18.4 being optional too.

Jvon--I put a lot of tires on D17's over the years. 90 +% were 14.9x28's. Once in a while we came across a series 4 that had 16.9x28's on it. I never saw one with bigger tires than that unless someone had put 19.4x26 combine tires and rims on their tractor. The 14.9's will be fine on yours.

17's were 1in wider than 45's.45's were 1in wider than WD's. By what Doc says I'll say WD=11in,45=12in & 17 13in. Measured WD & 45 once but I got CRS...

I have 16.9 tires on my D17 with 13 inch rims and they look and perform right. I personally would not want 14.9 on a D17....Dan

I've got 16.9's on mine and bought some 14.9's at auction awhile back. Was going to switch but those 14.9's look way narrow. I plan to continue w the 16.9's.

When the original 16.9 wore out dad put 18.4 bf Goodrich on and they cracked between the cleets within a year dealer wouldn't warranty unless dad got wider rims bought a new set 185 rims mounted new 18.4 on them she's now on her 5 set of shoes wouldn't put any thing less on one that was working now ,, I don't have any trailer Queens

I have three Series IV D17s and they all have 16.9x28 tires one we have had since 1970 it had the orignals then and they were 16.9. All of mine are serial numbers above 80,000. My Dad brought a new D17 in 1958 and it had the smaller tires. I think they were called 13x28 then. Later changed to 14.9x28. My rims are all 15 inch. I mearured them to make certain. They may have changed rim size at some point in the production.

where did I measure from? Width is from inside of bead not outside of total rim.

Shoot, I was at the farm tonight working on the front steering pedestal and forgot to measure the rims. I did look at the tires and thought it looked kinda goofy. I think the 16.9 tire will be the right size, it has to the tires I have on there now. The lugs are just an odd design. I really think that is what is throwing me off.

Steve, I did not measure properly. It would be 15 inches to the outside of the bead on the tire.

I'd say by the time you add the curls at the bead to rim thickness etc you'd be really close to 15in on 13in rim.I think the 13in D17 rim had the rail bends ending right at the drop of the bend. The 45 sticks past bend a little and I can't remember if they use the block welded for support but the WD sticks a good bit beyond the bend and has a chunk of metal welded under the rail hook to the rim for support.

Everywhere I have looked, I have only seen rims in widths of 11, 13, 15 inches. Now, it doesn't state exactly where they are measuring-total width or just inside the bead. I have seen many sources state that you want rim width to be as close to tire width as possible so 13.6 tires would be on 11" rim; 14.9 tires on 13" rim; 16.9 tires on 15" rim. My WD45 has 16.9s on it and it states right on the tires "on 15"rim".

My 1957 WD-45 had 12 inch inner width rear wheels with 14.9 x 28 tires on it from the Factory..

No matter what the tire says,it doesn't make the rim something it isn't. I looked at dj's and OK tractor site and between them there were 11,12,13&15 in 28in rims.Something like a 180 would likely have 18.4 on a 15in rim.
