Can someone/anyone tell me how the heck I'm supposed to remove the radiator (and subsequently, the water pump) on a D17? I have unbolted the radiator shell, etc... but the "hood" (the piece with the radiator cap cut out/hole and the AC emblem) will not come off. It's like the two sections of sheet metal, between the lower and upper half of this hood is tack welded. The only way I can remove this piece is by loosening up the I Beam/engine block bolts that essentially hold the darn thing together.
I was so frustrated that i almost took a pair of tin snips to it... but I don't want to do that to my beloved tractor.
If someone/anyone has run into this issue, and knows a sound resolution, I would be eternally grateful.
** By the way - I don't think that I can get to the water pump without 1st removing the radiator but if I'm mistaken, please let me know.

Don't own a D17 but I do have a D14 and a service manual for same. I can't help you with the shroud removal problem (it's one piece for the D14) but the instructions for removing the water pump include removing the radiator. Now, someone may have figured out how to accomplish the task w/o pulling the rad, and hopefully he will post on here!

I took the radiator and shell off together.Take off the panel that goes from gas tank to radiator first.

Removing the bottom hose off the water pump is real fun too.

Thank you Dave!
Is this immovable piece called the shroud? I thought the shroud was typically a plastic piece that more or less protected the fan/radiator from a loose engine mount, etc... I must be wrong.
It's absolutely crazy to me to think that AC would make a fairly routine task so complicated. There has to be something I'm missing here.
Here's the excerpt from paragraph 135/pg 42 of the AC Shp Manual (which by the way is not an easy read... it's obviously meant for mechanics and not wannabe mechanics like myself. If anyone knows of a more simplistic User Manual, I would be very interested in buying it):
- Remove Grille
- Drain cooling system
- Remove both hood side panels (to clarify, I'm not having issues removing the hood>side panels)
- If equipped with Shuttle Clutch, remove oil coolant lines (does not apply to me)
- Remove Radiator Shell (this is where I'm getting stuck)
- Disconnect all hoses
- Unbolt and remove radiator from FRONT SUPPORT (the "front support" is comprised of 2 bolts connecting the radiator shell to the heavy metal frame. Once you remove these 2 bolts, and the 4 side bolts, andf of course the 2 hoses, the radiator moves freely... almost to the point where you get your hopes up thinking that you can shimmy the thing out without tearing the thing up).
Note - Radiator and radiator shell may be removed as a unit if so desired
Does anyone know of a listing of all parts, in a diagram/or picture format (sort of an illustrated anatomy) so that I can reference the actual part # I'm having so much trouble removing?

ok, I removed that part, or the two bolts securing that part to the front end. Its just the piece of molding going from the gas task to the radiator, whereas the side panels are secured... correct? Is this what you're referring to?
When you removed the radiator and radiator shell, did you have to remove the front panel/hood area that I'm having trouble with? If so, was the top/bottom piece (thickness of maybe two sheets of tin or sheet metal) welded together?

Now you are freaking me out. I did not see the water pump hose. Is it only accesible from underneath the tractor?
I'm a novice, at best... and I don't have the tools to do alot of stuff... but I heard the water pump is easy to replace. I'm beginning to think I was lied to...

You have to take of the grill first, take off the power steering fill neck, then there are 2,1/2" bolts at he bottom front of the radiator bolted to the PS resivour.

Maybe my tractor isn't a D17 because I don't have power steering. The process you're explaining does not relate to what I'm seeing on the tractor.
I really appreciate your help though. THANK YOU!!!

If you were able to post a picture or serial number of your tractor, any number of people would be happy to help you figure out what you've got. Best of luck,

As a point of fact: there are quite a few early D-17s out there that were not equipped with PS.

I have a D17 III with a FEL. The pump for the FEL is mounted in front of the radiator. I bought this tractor used, and it's not very pretty. I had to cut my radiator shell in half in order to remove it. It's basically cut right under the sticker, where there is already a seam from where two pieces of sheet metal were joined.

The shell should lift right off the radiator once you have all of the bolts out of the sides. The fan shroud is part of the radiator and you can't remove it without removing the entire radiator. A diesel is really easy to get the lower hose off the radiator. It sounds like a gas is not so easy. I would guess it would be easier to unbolt the pump from the engine on a gas and then pull it out of the lower hose. That fill tube for P/S is probably there even if the tractor doesn't have p/s. The pedestal is the same for power vs non power steering. The casting is the fluid reservoir, so it would need to be filled regardless to lubricate the internal mechanical parts.

Yup, that's EXACTLY what I'm up against. You confirmed I'm not a complete idiot. Why in the heck AC would make it where you literally have to cut the hood thing in half is beyond me... but it sounds like you did exatly what I'm thinking I'll have to do. BTW - my AC is old and was not taken care of... in other words, it will never appear in an AC museum... so I'm not all that bothered by cutting the thing off if needed. Did you re-attach the cut part back to the lower part? Or did you just leave that part off the tractor? If you re-attached it, what dids you use; steel plates, tack weld, etc...? |

I have a non PS D17 series I, last fall the rad was leaking, so I pulled the rad out in about 15 minutes. If I remember right I was able to pull the shell off first, then unbolt the rad. You must have something else going on.
cheers,
Creek

Pail in Kansas - you're are explaining the very thing I'm talking about. Did you find ANY alrternative to removing the radiator and/or water pump? What did you use to cut the two pieces from each other?
If ok, I'd like to send you a couple of pics to make sure we're comparing apples to apples here. Here is my email address; paulhclark@yahoo.com. If you're uncomfortable sending me an email, no worries... I understand. I'll try to figure out how to post them here as well.
