Ok, Got behind on this restoration. I see it was over 3 years ago that the original post was done. We of course did the HD15 and the GRAPPLE HD 11 while waiting for the perfect pieces to show up. (and we think they did yesterday). We got a bad case of "IRON DISEASE" when this showed up on an auction block in N. Calif. It is a 1957 HD11S farm tractor. Some of the features we were looking for were dry type steering clutches,no boosters etc.
![]() The swing frames and undercarriage are almost like new. We will be removing all of that for putting on track guards and blade trunnions and whatever else I can't remember . ![]() So some of your trained eyes might notice that this has an 11000 engine in stead of the original Lanova style engine. The 11000 was put in many years ago as an update and it has been parked in a barn for many years. We of course have lots of homes for an 11000 and it will be coming out and be replaced by an orginal 516 Lanova style. Our project is to restore one of these to this original 1955 model It will look like this when we are done. The drop dead date will be the third week in March for the Redwood Region Logging Conference antique equipment display in Eureka, Ca. Here's the original post to the Forum for more story. http://www.allischalmers.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=67724&KW=NEXT+RESTORATION&PID=533383&title=next-restoration-starting#533383 Also a link to the tractor running. http://vid966.photobucket.com/albums/ae147/doowder1/HD%2011%20RESTORATION/HD%2011%20RESTORATION_zpscaw0azct.mp4 We''ll keep you posted (LOL) MERRY CHRISTMAS!! |

Ditto on what the others said. So happy that there are guys with iron disease that keep this stuff from going to China. I must only have "half iron disease." I buy the stuff to keep it from going to China, but I don't seem to get it restored the way you and your crew does. I swear I'm going to have to haul that 5G out to you and hire you to finish it up. My uncle has some childhood memories on an HD5G, and he is chomping at the bit for me to get it together so he can come and play with it. Better get it done before it's too late. Merry Christmas to you and your family Mel. And keep stuff coming. Darrel

I remember the HD-9 having an over-center spring to reduce the steering clutch pull. Does the HD-11 have those?

Lee, yes the over center spring levers for the steering clutches stayed the same from the HD9 to the HD11s serial number 6069 (1960) when they started using a booster similar to the HD15s 20s early 16s etc. In 1964 stating with ser# 10,000 they went to oil steering clutches with inside hydraulic controlled clutches.

So we had a rainy day schedule and I gathered up some "DONOR TRACTOR" parts. You have to have some imagination and a vision.
![]() The canopy needs some body work and cleanup ![]() So the winch needs lots of attention. The cable hard nose came off the original tractor with our fathers picture. ![]() So we'll be dismantling the running tractor to turn the swing frames up to put these bottom track guards on. If you want to see how that's supposed to go it will be about the same as the grapple facelift episode. Also the blade trunions have to be changed. http://www.allischalmers.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=123759&KW=grapple+facelift&PID=1013415&title=hd11b-grapple-facelift-restoration#1013415 |

Good to see progress! Also good to see rain and puddles in the yard. Some of that stuff is supposed to come east and make 10" of snow down here, a couple feet in the mountains. Shameless thinks he's the only one who can make snow, we'll show him!

Ok, went out to "DONOR TRACTOR" row and recovered this 1955 HD11B for going under the wrench. It was one of our first adventures about 15-20 years ago. I have pictures hauling it across the Golden Gate Bridge. It fit fine, only 10 feet wide, no problem. We did find out about 5 years later that "you can't do that without a permit and CHP escort" LOL of course now that it's a" SANCTUARY CITY" don't know what they would do with us now.
![]() Over the years we have found some better specimens including the current one we just got for this project. This tractor has badly damaged intermediate pinion cap and stripped bolts in the case. It was a common problem with construction and logging tractors, not so with farm tractors. ![]() So were planning on using the blade, the engine, fenders and who knows what else. ![]() The plan is to take the blade off and then remove all the hydraulics and hardnose and try running the engine and see if it will do the job. It was running when we parked it. It is a 516 Lanova (Buda) that would be the original engine for the year. Trying o get some stuff close to the shop. We're expecting 6-10" of rain starting tomorrow threw next week and yes we're still working on the BIG BUILDING (but it's not waterproof yet) |

Mel, I know this may be slightly off topic but ...how many machines do you have in your yard including all donor machines? If you're not sure and it's raining don't do the count 'til a sunny day

Shameless, you forget these guys aren't used to the cold like Darrel is, they'd freeze their thongs off! (The ones on their feet)
Sure good to read you are getting more rain, we can use the snow! I guess that means if you ever go to get that HD41, you have to go south all around the bay to get it home? |

John, And it rained more today. Were supposed to get 2-3" in the next day. They cancelled schools for tomorrow.
We did have some 23 degree mornings before this storm got here. And yes were pretty happy with 46 degree rain. It makes lots of steam for the pressure washer. ![]() Mike, I already took those steering clutch levers off and fixed them. They must have had a midget operator, the seat was also in a low, low, hole. So we pushed it back in the shop after the steam settled and maybe try to start it tomorrow. ![]() |

Ok, here's where were at. After 40'' inches of rain now were still on a rainy day schedule. We were trying to make sure this 516 Lanova (BUDA) was giong to work for us.
![]() This engine was sitting for 15-20 years. It was running when it was parked, but do to the case and the damage from the intermediate pinion caps we knew we would probably not use the whole tractor again, thus becoming a "DONOR" tractor. We spent extra time with the PSB Bosch fuel injection pump to make sure we didn't damage it from sitting and being stuck. It was a good call because we had lots of problems getting it to work right. Almost threw in the towel do to time. ![]() We left it in the tractor and removed as much stuff as possible to work on it. Ok, so check this link for the startup. http://vid966.photobucket.com/albums/ae147/doowder1/HD%2011%20RESTORATION/HD11%20START%20U%20TUBE_zps5qpnmnmv.mp4 So we've made the call to continue with this engine. I think we'll maybe start a new post for further progress reports. David's been cleaning and servicing his paint gun and paint booth (as you know it's outside) We will need a weather break. A Redwood Region Logging Conference representative came by to check up on us and see what we might have for the show this year. Yeah, now we have our feet pretty close to the fire. Parts are going to start flyin so stay tuned!! |

So here's where were at. We needed these fenders, because we thought they would be easier to restore. They appear to be very straight.
![]() We also had to cut off all the miscellaneous stuff in the way, mostly the home made canopy posts. Anybody ever use an AIRARC? ooohhhh what fun!! Can't call yourselfS a wanna be welder until you've run an AIRARC and made it work. ![]() So these are the brackets for the canopy and blade controls from "donor tractor"3 that also need to be arced off. These will be welded on the fender in the previous picture aventually. ![]() So we commenced to turn this perfectly good farm tractor into an old cable logger. ![]() This engine was upgraded to an 11000 from a 516 and we have a place for it as soon as we get time. ![]() For now it just gets an engine stand. ![]() Took the fuel tank fenders and battery boxes of in one piece. ![]() Ok, here's the bottom, stand by. Some assembly required. ![]() |
