I sincerely hope the diagnosis was accurate. I have seen quite a few hydro's that were supposed to be going bad/weak, and all that was wrong was the hydro's drive belt wasn't TIGHT. Also, while looking for a used hydro, you'd better know what you're looking for. M-2's from 1977 and 78 were a 4X6 size with their own charge pump built in. 1979 and up were a 6X6 size and charge pump was belt driven by the hydraulic pump under the radiator. A 6X6 with a weak charge pump will make the hydro perform badly, but it isn't the hydro....it's the charge pump.

Even a 6x6 should only cost $3-4,000 to rebuild! A gauge on the charge pressure line should tell if the pump is still working. I don't know if there is a way to check bypass/ case drain on the dynapower units?

Quick test/fix/diagnosis would be try to adjust high pressure up to 5,000 psi (this assumes it is lower than 5,000). If it raises up to that point, you might be fixed. If hydro doesn't respond to adjustment, there's a problem.....probably too much case drain/leakage. This also assumes charge pressure is within specs.

x2! The Doc could easily write several books on this stuff. No doubt he's forgotten more than I will probably ever know.

I don't know Creston, you're a lot younger then most of us with plenty of brain cells left to fill up with useful information, and some unnecessary stuff. Stay away from Shameless and you'll be fine!

most of the 6X6 hydro's suffer from a simple fix. Remove the input shaft via pulling the seal retainer /shaft after removing pulley and inspect the snap ring behind the bearing. This can be done w/o pulling hydro. IF and it will be, the shaft snap ring groove is about 2x the width it should be, then the input shaft has moved out and let the pressure off the rotating group. Simply machine the groove for two snap rings and reinstall the shaft with new seal. Probably fixed 20 of these for less than $200.oo This is for hydros that quit pulling or have trouble taking off but otherwise operate ok in lower gears.

Before you put hydro back in , clean All lines, cooler, pumps, restive, new filter, or any place that could have foreign material . Had a customer blew RWA hose, local ship made new hose. Grinding from where hose was cut went through system, hydro, and RWA motors. One hi priced hose. Can not be too clean. MACK

also when installing a new hydro = 6x6 start and run engine before putting the belt on. This will charge unit before spinning rotating group. |

What is the correct pressure for the charge pump? Where do you check the psi for the 5k pressure on the hydro? Ive got one acting up on an early l2 and wasn't looking forward to dealing with it.

another option is Herrs machine, Washington KS.
Also, 6x6 hydros came out in 78 for standard machines, and I think in 77 for rice combines. not sure about the hillsides though. |
