Just got a 185 Diesel in a trade. When trying to get it off the trailer it would not move in reverse. Had to pull it off . It would not move forward either. I'm not sure how they loaded it. There is an unusual noise in the transmission or the two speed when you put it in gear and let out the clutch NOT A GEAR GRINDING NOISE BUT SOME WHAT OF A HIGH PITCH NOISE. I attempted to move it under its own power after it was unloaded. I put it in 4th gear and it would move forward. I then tried it in reverse and it would not move. I tried first gear also but no movement. I didn't try any other gear/s as I was running out of time .I checked oil levels and they were okay and clean looking. It's a one owner tractor with about 2600 hours with 18.4-30 rear tires and a 1984 model. The owner had problems with the transmission or he thought and had it worked on. When he got it back he started using it with a bush hog mower. After about 5 hours it stopped moving, as if the transmission was locked up. He let it set overnight and when he tried it the next day it would move under its own power only to lockup again after a few hours of working the bush hog. My question is where do I start ? What could it be ? I'm thinking it will need to be split to make repairs. RODNEY

Does the 3 point work, does the steering work? Check both dip sticks under the seat. If it locked up, that sounds like no oil in rear end causing pinion bearing to lock up then frees up after cooling down.
Need more info. MACK

Mack, I'll check the three point later today. I checked the oil levels yesterday with both dip sticks (between the dash and the seat) and both looked good and were full. I'll do more checking later today , but for now I'll be busy most of the day with our mother on her 100th birthday. She has a lot of plans for today so my tractor will have to wait it's turn.

Rod - 1981 was the last year for 185's. That 73 3-16's plow I bought from you at Dale's show is still going strong. Mike

You are right on the year . I need to check my typing for errors more often. 1980 is the correct year . MACK, I started it yesterday and tried the three point hitch. It moved up from where it was to the top, a movement of about 6 to 8 inches. When I moved the lever to go down it returned to the previous position down only 6 to 8 inches. Again and again total movement never changed up and down 6 to 8 inches. No where close to the range of full travel. So I stood myself of 220 pounds on the arms and movement of 6 to 8 inches was all it would move. It makes the noise of "YANG YANG YANG YANG" when the clutch peddle is out. Push it in and the noise is gone let it out and the noise is back. Oils are clean with no odor other than oil. Where to next?? Open to suggestions. Rodney

It roles freely. We pulled it off of the trailer and into the shed with ease. The tractor was running when we were pulling it that way we had use of the power steering.

When you shift PD from hi to lo and back again, can you hear it shift? If you can, I would guess spider gear pin. Jack one wheel off ground, transmission in first gear. If wheel turns easy, look at spider gears. MACK

Mack: The tractor shifts into 4th gear and reverse only. I've tried every thing I can think of to get the transmission to shift into any of the other gears but nothing works. When shifting the PD into high with the clutch out the noise speeds up and going to the low side reduces the speed of the noise. RODNEY

I think it's time to remove the transmissions shift cover and take some good pictures. Note that the two dowel bolts go in the left front and right rear holes. Also, the trans is to be shifted in second (3-4) gear to remove it, so good luck on that.
