Made a little discovery on the mystery thing (Pretty sure it's a horse powered grinder)
The ol' Ferd pulled it out of the ground, revealing the underside, which has big gears. I'm thinking it was mounted a couple feet off the ground (high enough to set a bucket under) and a pole stuck out, and a horse was hooked to the end of the pole and walked round and round. What do you guys think? Anyone have or have seen one of these, or something similar? Does anyone know what it's officially called? Thanks! ![]() ![]() This photo shows the hopper on top. Not sure what that long bolt is for, unless there's missing parts. ![]() This strap is bolted to the big round piece (see above pics). I believe this piece was attached to the wooden pole, and the loop on the end is where you hooked the horse. ![]() And again, here's a photo looking down into the thing. ![]() |

I need to soak it down and see if I can get it freed up. It'd be neat to get it working again. Then I could throw some corn in the top and see what happens.
My sister has horse that needs to learn to work for its keep, Lol!

Where would it go after ground up. Seems like there would be a place for it to fall down out bottom.

That's why I'm excited to get it freed up, so I can see what happens. And like I said, there may be missing pieces.

It'll be a few weeks before I have time to work on it! College has got me busier than a 1 armed wallpaper hangar. Here's a video I found. The grinder isn't identical, but it's similar.

![]() This is similar, but not identical. I see some sort of handle on that long bolt. Looks like it may be a device used to regulate flow or maybe regulate how coarse the output product is?

That would get those old gears spinning. Talking about getting the job done quickly though. |

Based on the pic of the similar one I would say that bolt coming out the top probably had a handle on it and turning it would adjust for fine or coarse grinding.
