The ED40. Unloved when it arrived in North America and unloved now. Around here, you pay by the pound for one. There seem to be more in Canada than in the USA, but was not a good tractor from the get go. Imported from England for a couple of years in the early 60s. Diesel engine was notoriously hard starting and had a hydraulic problem that broke the rear casting - right from Norm's bible.
Parts are near impossible to find. Edited by DSeries4 - 02 Nov 2016 at 6:48pm |

The engine is a Standard 23C diesel which was also used in the Ferguson TO35 which makes engine parts more available. Other parts on the tractor are only available if you find them used. Not a good tractor to invest in.

Hi. These tractors were used mainly for boat anchors. They are normally sold by the pound. LOL. Ross D.

Aww. I thought the hydraulics on these were supposed to be good! Fromm the ads I saw they had a very superior 3pt system. Sure looked better than a SC conversion.

Yep the hydraulics were so good that if you didn't have the chains hooked the lift cylinder would bust the housing.Ford should have sold them as the 8N diesel(LOL) |

not a bad price for a little diesel. id biy it and put a loader on it and use it till something breaks. probably better than a newer chinese tractor anyway...

Sounds like the perfect time to pick one up cheap. In the antiques market it is usually the flops that there are few of and are pushed aside that one day end up being worth a bunch because once they become antiques everyone realizes that nobody saved one.
Same story as the John Deere patio tractors and now look what those little things sell for to collectors! Dealers couldn't give them away at the time and had to repaint to sell them now mine is probably more valuable than any of my big tractors. |

Like the really really cheap all original John Deere "Low radiator" G I'm in the process of buying! I want a G because my Dad grew up on one, but this unstyled low radiator is worth more than any other G!

Exactly, now worth a bunch more to collectors because a cooling issue wasn't upgraded. On another note that is an awesome find! I love the unstyled G's. |

I agree if the diesel motor runs and you don't use the 3 point which I seldom use on my tractors. Then it is dirt cheap. If you ran it one year and scrapped it you would be ahead. My problem is I want to fix everything I have and don't seem to be smart enough to just cut my losses when they get bad. Edited by Dan73 - 03 Nov 2016 at 10:44am |

I think it is a good deal at $1,100. May be able to talk the seller down under a grand. I think the collectability will go up in the future and if it runs and works, will be worth a lot more, plus it's unusual, like an RC or one of the B variations.
