I have a 4 bar model 78; wondering if they were available in a 5 bar and/or if it takes a great deal of work to 'upgrade'?

Shane - I know the 77's came in 4 and 5 bar and the main difference between the 77G and the 78 I thought was the straight vs. staggered back axle. I think they called the 5 bar a "bean" rake in the 77G manual. I have a 5 bar 77G. I'll have to look at this weekend to see if the reel "dishes" are stamped with holes for both 4 and 5 bolt mounting positions. Mike

According to Swinford, both the 78 and 77 rakes came in both 4 and five bar versions. 80 and 100 teeth respectively. A five bar version with 145 closely spaced teeth was offered for beans.

The dish should have holes for both 4 & 5 bar. I have parts rakes...Dale

Thanks fellas, I'll look at the dishes to see...I'm fairly sure it has the holes for both. I have to say, it's a nice rake to use behind the WC.

Shane, They are made for 5 bars as an option. Easiest way is this. One bar has no holes on either side of it at bearing holder. It stays in place,then there will be 4 others holes spaced to allow 5 bars to be equally spaced. I have a manual, and it describes this with pictures and captions. If you have trouble, let me know. I checked this weekend on my 77G (a 5 bar) and it's stamped with holes for both mountings as Tracy describes. Mike
