    Posted: 21 Jun 2010 at 7:50am

I had my Governor implode on me this weekend. Weights were in about 15 pieces, and the teeth on the gear were stripped for about an inch and a half around the spindle. I checked the gear teeth on the front camshaft gear and noticed that there was one tooth missing. but in spinning the crank to check I untimed my engine ( I think it probably jumped time when it hit the missing teeth on the Governor). I have tried to time the engine using the method in the book, which is also Glenn's and Bill Long's and I can't get it to fire at all, nor can I find a TDC or Fire mark. I do have spark from the coil and the distributor... I'm at my wits end!!! Help please.

TIA Miles

There is reason why you see so many Gov assemblies for sale on Ebay new. In my limited experience I have notice alot of wear on the flyweight, pin, and ears on the gear. Took one apart last month that had the inside of the housing all tore up from the slop. It was on its way to failure too. No I'm wondering if the if the addition of  lube sprayed directly in the gov housings was an effort to ad life to gov assemblies. Don't know much past CA's but on them set the word fire in the bellhousing window while on #1 compression stroke and look for he dot on the cam gear. You will probably have to spray something on it to find the dot as it will be hidden by gunk.

I completely cleaned the flywheel and there is not a mark on the wheel. I'm not sure why, but this tractor has always been an adventure! lol

The marks on the flywheel are stamped on the rear face, not on the OD. The F mark or "fire" mark is 30 before TDC. The DC mark is TDC. Set your mag to fire on DC and it will run if your valve train is timed to the crankshaft. If you think the valve train is out of time, stop get help or read the book.
