 Topic: WD wont start

will roll over twice and pop throught the carb and stop.checked all the timing marks,valves move freely.seems like the intake valve is open a little when you have the flywheel fire marks lined up on the bottom.is there anything in the timing gears that might throw cam timing off. thanks for the help

The intake valve should not be open at all when the piston is anywhere near the top of the compression stroke. I would go through and set the valve lash before doing anything else. As Bob asked, it would help to know if work has been done on the engine recently and if so what work. When did it run last or have you ever had it running?

What they said! If the tractor was shut down in a running state, you can expect that the timing, etc., are all in order... but if it was worked on, and left sitting, verify everything- it may be something silly like timing 180 degrees out of phase.
One other thing- you may have a 'bent valve' condition, hence, it's not seating. It is possible for an engine to run with a bent valve, but if it's an intake valve, it'll generally screw up intake manifold vacuum enough so that the other cylinders will get a really lean mixture.
One thing you COULD do...
Pull off the manifold, turn the crank to put piston at TDC. Pull valve cover and rockers, compress and remove the valve spring keeper and spring. Hold the top of the valve stem, and spin the valve... put a finger in the port and feel the valve... if it wobbles, she's bent. If not, it may just not be sealing well... you may find that there's some gunk caught under the seat. It MAY have a little 'ridge' on the stem, that formed from sitting a long time, and when you pull the valve closed, it 'sticks' on this ridge just a smidgen before the valve closes. I ran into a similar situation on a long-sitting engine... I sprayed some light oil on the stem, and down in the port... and put my cordless drill on the valve stem, and spun it both ways a bit, and it seated, started, and ran fine.

That sounds like a good approach, Dave. One thing - if you are setting valve lash with the engine cold, it'll be okay if you use the "operating tem" specification. Once it's cured and running, you can reset with the engine warm.

thanks for the help guys it was running just fine put it in the barn and now it does that.we had just put the head on not to long ago like a month earlier it is possible that it was something in there will have to do more checking thanks again

My bet is electrical. Start with points and condensor. I have also seen it happen with a weak battery but usually that's obvious when cranking.
