I found a disc for sale that is 25 feet wide. Suppose to be in working condition but I can see its missing a blade and I think it needs a few more blades too.
Im guessing my Allis 7040 wont pull a 25 foot disc? I would have to buy duals im sure. Im at stock horsepower I believe with loaded tires.

Tell me what you think, if I should run from it or maybe it just needs some work. It also doesn't have scrapers so that might be a problem.

That looks really nice for $3000, even needing a little TLC. I would think your 7040 would pull it but it depends on the soil type and if it is hilly. My opinion is that would be the largest disk to pull with a 140 hp tractor "here" in relatively flat sandy loam soil. I pulled a 30' disk with a White 2-150 years ago and it had plenty of power for the disk at 150 hp.

it is missing a few disks and scrapers, they are relitivly cheap if just a few are needed, can use chain for scrapers like I explained earlier in a post. the blades also look quite wore down. but will still work for awhile. AC disks pull easier than most. but i'm sure you will need duals. 7040 should pull it o-k.

I might go take a look at it. I'm just afraid of I buy it I won't be able to pull it. My ground is Loam. Not really clay or sand. I am using a 10 foot bushog disc that doesn't cut at all. I used to pull the 10 foot with a Massey 165 or a 990 D

That disc has adjustable gang angles, so you can lighten the load a bit at the lowest setting. Four really good matched rear tires on your 7040 are a MUST if you're going to try to pull that disc.

I have a 26ft just like that. I pull it with a 7060 and 7080. Traction is the issue I have plenty of power. I've never had it behind my 7040 but in a pinch I wouldn't be afraid of it.

Dr. Allis I might pass this one because I have worn firestone spade grip rice tires on it. I also don't have duals yet. I might look for a 18-22 foot disc. I really want one that will actually cut , not a angle frame disc

I would also say you'll either want fluid filled rear tires or weights also.

When I was a kid, we used to pull a 24' white disk with a Deere 4520 with fluid and duals. Only 130 HP, but about 500 lbs heavier than you maybe. Had 18.4 tires. Pulled it ok I was told. I pulled it once with a 4440, can't remember if it had fluid then. It pulled it fine, but if you hit a little wet or sticky spot, you were raising the disk.
A couple years later they bought an old Deere 4wd 7020. I pulled it a lot with that and never had any traction issues.
I don't know how the white disk would pull compared to the Allis.

It's a tough choice. I don't want to pass it up but it would be the max the tractor would pull. I like the case 490 discs but they are 8000 plus dollars

You could probably resell if it didn't work well for you.
If you're disking now though with a 10' disk, you must not be doing that many acres and maybe a 20' would be better. Even then you'll probably want duals.

I did 40 acres this year. 70 next year and hopefully keep expanding. So no not a lot of acreage so a 20 foot will work Just fine.

Unless you have really flat fields and light soil I think you are going to have a hell of a time pulling that disk with a 7040. We used to pull a 19' Deere 220 disk with a 4440 (about the same HP as a 7040) with duals and fluid in the inside tires and on occasion we had traction problems in some conditions. Our neighbors used to have a 24' AC disk identical to the one you are looking at and they always pulled it with a Deere 8430 articulated 4x4.

We have a Center Fold 3500 I think it is, with near new blades, narrower than that one, and our 7030 in good shape will not pull it in flat silty loam, unless you are in a low gear, and then you run out of traction without duals. Our 7060 weighted up with duals plays with the same disc, so as others have said, I think you are borderline on being able to do it with the setup you have.

I am going to pass on it. I dont think my tractor will pull it. I think 20-22 feet is enough for this tractor. I will keep looking around maybe another one will come up for sale.

I think you're smart for passing.
You said you had worn out tires. You said you would need to buy duals. So you're looking at, what, $4000 in tires to give your tractor a shot with a 25' disc that needs work? Go 22', and drive a little faster when you can and not work the snot out of it all day long.

Yeah thats my exact thoughts. I dont have enough experience with my soil also to be sure how it will pull. These tires will still last me a couple seasons but I doubt they would pull a 25 foot disc.

Since it is going to need repairs why no take two disc off each gang.You would only need to shorten the axles.

You wouldn't have to shorten the axles at all. Just use the center of a wore blade as a spacer. You'll be at the same length.

Yup or build it out with anything like stacking washers or pipe. We had an 12 foot I think ac disc set when I was a kid. It didn't fold and was almost too wide to transport it would be over both the yellow and white lines at the same time. Anyway that disc had sealed bearings and we would have to replace two every summer dishing 150 acres two passes so 300 actually acres I guess you could say but the second pass pulls alot easier smoothing it out. Anyway the bearings where 100 each back in the 80s that is what would scare me with a used disc I'd someone abused it and ran it with bad bearings you could have one heck of a repair bill.

Too bad your not closer, I have a 18 foot Krause disc for sale that would be great for your 7040. I has 19 inch blades and in good shape. Probably going to take it to Mowery auction today. With duals, unless you really go deep, your 7040 should pull it. Friend of mine had a 21 foot 490 and it played with it. Good luck. If you look around you can find a nice 490 around $3000 also.
