We recently bought a new started from B&B formu 620 and noticed it only has 9 rotor teeth while the original has 10. My dad says he was always told that you can't use 9 teeth ones one them, but we would like clarification on this subject. I did talk to Steve and he said they work but my dad wants other people's insight.

I'm not sure HOW you can get a 9 tooth gear to PROPERLY mesh with a ring gear that was DESIGNED for a 10 tooth starter gear. There's just NO way it will work PROPERLY. I'd have to dig up a Machinest handbook or 'Gear cutting 101' to get specifics, but a 9 toother will not properly mesh. I 'suppose' you 'could' add washers to mount the starter away from the ring gear and some of the 'face' of the teeth will just touch the ring gear but that's NOT how it was designed.
If some gear guru can explain, I'm more than willing to listen. Jay |

We looked up online and it says do not use the starter to replace the cast-iron head 10 teeth
