I put together a wd 201 motor with a wd45 crank and flat top pistons. Was wondering what carb to use as the tsx853 I put on it is not giving me enough air and fuel. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks

D19 Carb TSX 848 I think the number is.
I have to run a fuel pump though to keep enough flow. I use 93 octane in mine. The 464 should flow enough though. You can use the numbered drills to drill out the main jet orifice. Also put in a larger venturi (1"). McDonald carb has these for $20. Got a friend with a WC setup with the 464 as above and it will flow enough fuel and air for 2000 RPM. He does run race gas though.

Sorry to add, not sure what the difference is on the 853 vs 464. I would think they are nearly the same?

What would I have to modify if I go to a d19 carb. If I drill my main jet and go to the 1" venturi on the 853 carb any idea where I should be hp wise on the dyno. Thanks

Your existing carb should work just fine with the main jet backed way out. Drilling out the jet in the bottom of the bowl .001" or .002" might be of some advantage if you are running a little lean, but a clean carb with the adjustable main backed out should be close. Drilling out the bowl jet too much will give you more tuning problems than you can imagine. Are you sure you don't have a fuel supply issue?? like needing an electric pump to keep up with demand?? How many RPM's are you trying to run?? A larger D-19 type carb will (when adjusted correctly) make more HP, yes. Your complaint of "not giving me enough air and fuel" is kind of vague.

We have never dynoed his but it sure does pull harder vs using a stock 464.
I am not familiar with the 853 but I assume it is close to a 464. You can measure the venturi on the 853 and see what it is. Probably 7/8"? Drilling a little goes a long ways. I looked but couldn't find different main jet sizes, maybe you can. Also you can fill in the ramp at the carb inlet to let the airflow go in smoother and faster. As is the air ramp is at a 90 degree angle which does not make for a smooth transition. The D19 carb is much bigger, you will need to get the bolt holes to align by elongating the manifold holes (Assuming you have the larger/later manifold). I had to use a dremel on my manifold intake hole to smooth it out. Biggest I have seen is a 190 Holley carb, but I have no experience with those. With your motor size, I think the 853 should work for you. But that is my opinion and there are far more experienced pullers on here.

190 XT Bendix carb will work too, but will require whacking off the manifold throat and fabbing on a larger one. For 226 cubes the D-19 carb would be better suited and still allow for some lugging. The carb he has should work if adjusted correctly and supplied with adequate fuel delivery.

Thanks for the pic showing the d19 carb bolted up. Doesn't look to complicated to make work if I only had the carb. Does anybody have the d19 carb they would consider selling. I have no problem if it needs rebuilt. Thanks for all the advice guys!

The throttle rod when bolted up rubbed the block so I had to shave some of it off to keep it from binding.
I got mine online during a sale at tractorparts ASAP. I think it was $150.

How about a Holly carburetor from a 190 on a CA? I'd previously been using a worked over TSX869, It would die a bit on hard pulls. I found the Holley really allows more RPMs. after a little modification and drilling the idle jet a bit, it runs great on E85. I have the D14/15 manifold refitted to the CE head. To get the carburetor to bolt up I put aluminum studs in the carb flange and re-drilled it to match the manifold. I can maintain over 3000 RPM in 3rd gear at 2500 pounds, no matter how hard of a pull. |

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY |

I'm really glad someone found a use for one of those Holley brand carbs from a One-Ninety. I'll bet 90% of them got scrapped and replaced with a Bendix back in the day.

do you have a inline fuel filter if so get rid of it and use a inline screen on a gravity system the filter is a huge restriction I use a 464 on mine I like it better than the d19 carb

I used a D17 carb bored it on both sides made a new ventury 1.480. Took choke out and I had to make a new butterfly. I bored carb side of manifold to match carb just enough left for a gasket. Bored manifold and polished it. I run a gravity flow no pump, I made a stainless tank to fit inside of my tank. I run a slight chocolate color on plugs, 110 hp. 2500 rpms. No fuel or air problem

I have my original tsx853 carb off my d17 combine motor. Rob would you be interested in working some of your magic on it and if so what kinda price would you want? I could ship it to you. It's had some drilling done to the Jets and stuff to try and make a little more hp when the tractor was on the dyno but couldn't get it to preform well at all. Please letake me know otherwise I will look for a different carb. Thanks

I would think a mildly worked over 464 would work quite nice on that setup you have. A little bowl and intake bore work with a different venturi should be most adequate for that 201. I worked over a few 464's for the 226 engines and they work fine. You shouldn't have any trouble with that Carb on a 201 engine... JMHO

48acwd did get a chance to see the pics of my carb. I can do a carb for u but u won't need it as big as mine is. R u running stock air filter or a straight pipe and air filter on top. U can take ur choke out and make ur ventury bigger.
