Need some info on use of the bi-metallic clutches on the hd4 model Allis dozer. I installed the bi-metallic clutches in the drive instead of the fiber old style. I had a bearing go down on the drive pinion and pulled everything out. long story short, I pulled the clutches apart to replace the spring face plate and found the steel plates scratched bad as well as the bi-metallic clutches.   the clutches were still working great when I pulled them apart, but I am considering going back to the original type fiber ones. any thoughts and experiences on this would help me make the best decision.  thanks Randal

I have the metallic in my HD5 and no problems at all - thing is they do not seems to hold moisture or rust onto metal discs so work great . the master clutch in the 5 is also metalic 
 Now in dump trucks i changed over to metallic there also as did my IH 460 utility tractor .

thanks coke. I know that with metal on metal there is going to be rough surfaces on the faces of the steel plates and the clutches. I also know that the fiber do not hold up that well. I also work my dozer pretty hard in rocky areas which puts a lot of stress on the clutches.  they never did slip and I guess that is what is supposed to happen with the metallis ones. thanks

Trucking industry originally called them button clutches.  Were horrible in the first versions until we were finally schooled on them.  When installing the heavy truck clutches align the multiple discs button to button, if get staggered as many would just place them they would chatter like hell when engaging.  Would slip until severe loads unless buttons were aligned plate to plate.
