I just replaced the brakes on my b.
And it has little to none stoping power going backwards.

Going forwards it stops great .

Is this the way these tractors are.
Or did I do something wrong.

Thoughts please.

Pretty much the nature of the beast. Don't ever depend on stopping anything but the weight of the tractor on level ground.

What type of material was it...like a gray material? That stuff is crap. I have something that will stop you, for sure, but it isn't junk material, therefore it costs more. My grandfather's 1955 B model - the brakes would hold a good size load of hay at stand still uphill.
Currently- WD,WC,3WF's,2 D14's B. Previously- I 600,TL745,200,FL9,FR12,H3,816 LBH. Earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal!

They use cheap material any more, I've dealt with a lot of it in the industry. I use the woven material with the brass in it like they used a long time ago. Good stuff and will stop you on a dime and holds good. In fact, most everyone I deal with wants that type material on their brakes, so I stopped using the cheap stuff.   Rick

See the problem is that the brakes will not grab going backwards but If I go forwards I can slide the tires.

The new pads are Gray they came from my local ac dealer.
Could they need broke in?

Ronnie,
One thing I learned after installing new bands was to tighten them up snug with the adjuster.  Then, drive the tractor and mash the HECK out of the brake pedal (one at a time).  Mash and hold.  Let the tractor drag it a little.  Then readjust the band with the adjuster.  This helps to shape the band to form to the drum.  I do it in both directions.  Try this out.   I'm not discouraging you from buying from Rick.  I get all my stuff from him.  Good prices and excellent workmanship.
