What is a good starter to use on a 400 cube wc. I have a gear reduction starter on know and 2 12 volt batteries. It has all it can do to start my tractor. I know people use a diesel starter off a 45 diesel. I run 11to 1 compression.

I fixed mine by running A ground direct to the starter use 2/0 cable
|

Get a starter from hi torque imi out of California gonna run ya around 600 bucks but it'll start it

How did I ever get by with a standard WD45 gas starter with the center armature bushing???? I had good welding cables for pos and neg to the starter, one 850 CCA battery and 390 cubes at 12 to 1 compression. Ran this way for several years without any issues.

I also put a ignition switch on mine I get it rolling over then hit the switch

Rob,
I can build a pretty stout Starter motor from a Delco core if you have one to fit your WC. Usually runs around $475. or so if interested. I've done bout' a dozen of em' so far for our pulling customer's and everyone has been more than satisfied...

I also have batteries up front does it Make a difference having them closer to starter. Or just bigger cables and ground to starter

Its always a good practice to have your power source as close as possible. If you have to keep them up front, run cable the size of sewer pipe to cut down on voltage drop....

Patrick what size tires do u use on your tractor and rpms in open class. What do u have for cubes. How much hp. I have 400 cubes tried Dino and broke drop box. I was at 0ver 90 when broke. U have awesome looking tractor. What tire size. I have 15.5 38.

I have 15.5x38 Its 350 ci don't know the exact HP I run close to 2950 in the open class

That's GREAT Steve ! LOL, you mean I can't pull 500 AMPS through 20 feet of #18 wire ??
Sad thing is I KNOW someone who used 3/8 copper 'bussbar' for his battery feeds pushed it through 5/8 black rubber garden hose to insulate it. It was pretty and no voltage drop either !!

I use a 170 spring worked on the weights and the throttle rods I made a spring adjuster and a adjustable rod on the carb side the carb head and manifold has had a lot of work done to it
