Not a happy camper as I discovered the shaft seal is leaking on my power steering pump. Instructions say to take apart the pump so the shaft can be removed along with the seal. Trouble is the pump is screwed together with what looks like 8, 12 point cap screws. Will standard 12 point sockets fit these? All I have is 6 point and a 1/4" is too small and a 9/32" is too big.

Here's a picture of the 8 screws and then one of the leaking shaft seal.

Had the same problem...McMaster Carr has the 12 point sockets in stock and are quick on delivery.  As I recall however, you want to get a deep well socket because the normal one is too thick to fit in the recessed area.  Den

Keep us updated on the progress with the John Barnes pump. I have one on my Series IV and I was talking shop with the local hydraulic/pump repair shop and he said those are a b*tch to work on. Ryan

Thanks everyone. You know what they say "every project is an opportunity to acquire more tools" I'll update as soon as I get the sockets.

Should be a 1/4" 12-point deep-well, and yes, a good investment.

It's been my experience that specialty shop guys will, more often than not, advise against working on them yourself, particularly even if the job isn't difficult.

I recently had a similar problem with the steering control valve on my Hyster H50H forklift.... it started gushing fluid on my left shoe.

Some steering valves and hydraulic pumps can be somewhat 'party' conglomeration of stuff, and of course, they're sensitive to dirt, grit, and choices of solvents, so when you dismantle it, hold it IN a bucket (so anything that comes out unexpectedly, lands where you can find it) and don't be afraid to take pictures in the process, so you have reference for reassembly.

ON my steering valve, once dismantled, knocking out the seals and installing new was easy. Assembling it required a little vaseline (to help hold the vanes and springs 'n stuff in place) for reassembly... but once done, torque it right, put it back together, and it hasn't leaked a drop since.
Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.

Thanks Dave. I found a set on Amazon and they will be here in a couple of days. Guess I can spend that time polishing out the paint on the hood. Still have a little haze in it. Thanks for all the tips!!

Well the 12 point sockets came today. Got the pump apart and the seal replaced and have it back together. There was a gasket between the two pieces of the pump. It looked like a metal foil gasket. For some strange reason I was able to get it apart, get the old seal out and new one in and it back together and didn't destroy the foil gasket. I'll put it back on the WD45 tomorrow night and then get it tested over the weekend. Thanks for all the help and suggestions everyone. Here's a few pictures.

What size pulley was on the front of your pump? The shaft fell out of mine sometime before I aquired it so I had to make a new shaft but I don't know what size pulley it is supposed to have.
