Picked up a D17 series 4 that wasn't running.  Got it to fire up today.  Just put some gas in it, cranked it for awhile with the wire off the coil to make sure oil pressure built back up cause it had been sitting for awhile.  Checked for spark and had it and as I was checking for spark, the ole girl tried starting on three cylinders.  Put the other spark plug in, and she started right up.  Problem is it was running wide open.  I looked in the manual and it wasn't really clear, but I am guessing that idle is with the throttle lever at about 1 o'clock and as you pull it down it opens it up.  I tried it in all positions and it's just wide open.  Linkage is moving back and forth to the governor.  Did not check the carb side to see if it is moving.  Maybe the carb is gummed up and it's stuck open.  She ran for about a minute, and then conked out.  I haven't cleaned the carb or sediment bowl yet, so I am poor word choiceuming she's full of crud somewhere.  If I have time, I will post some pictures of her.  She's in pretty good shape but needs some work.   I think the hourmeter says a little over 7000 hours so she has worked alot back in the day.

see if the linkage that goes from the governor to carb is moving my WD did this and the shaft had siezed where is comes out of the governor, It might be the carb butterfly is seized or something is stuck in it. These are just places I would start, The engine stoping could be from crud in the fuel system but I doubt that is why it ran wide open.

Chuck, if the linkage is free to the carb, you might pull it off and check the throttle plate. My WD did this a couple of years ago and I found that brpoor word choice screws were used to attach the throttle plate during a carb rebuild and had broken. I found the plate wedged in the head.

Chuck,  After you've checked out what the other guys have told you and everything checks fine there, don't rule out that the governor might have thrown the weights. The D17 likes to do that a lot. Been there, done that.  Rick
