A governor housing from a WD45 is exactly the same as a 170/175 (the distributor is not the same). You will have to at least check or set up the backlash locating pin when changing governor housings from one engine to the other. Governor weights to a 170/175 are different than a WD45 or D17, but all weights interchange between different governor housings/gears.

Makes sense as the the 170/175 didn't have have easily removable hoods like the WD45 and you couldn't do a valve cover oil fill spout so you put oil in it via the cap on the governor just like the 45.  Mike

I installed the governor from the series2 d17 on to the 170/ss6 block and the locating pin/ dowl pin on the D17/226 governor does not match up with the locating hole on the 170/226 block it is about 3/4 to an inch apart so I eyeballed it up and I think the timing is possibly off. Do i need different governor weights, would that help, this governor does not have a oil fill on it. I dont know what to do I dont have as much experience as others.

The locating pin has nothing to do with ignition timing. it controls the amount of clearance (backlash) between the governor gear and the camshaft gear. If you notice, the top two holes on the governor housing are oversized and use flatwashers to cover the big holes. The bottom hole is the pivot hole, so you can rotate the governor housing "in" to tighten the lash, or "out" to loosen. Each governor hsg was hand fitted on the engine so to speak and then the pin hole was drilled thru and into the block for perfect alignment. Change governor hsgs?? the pin hole may not line up. I'd shoot for about .004" to .005" backlash....just short of tight and room enough for oil to get between the gears. Why it won't run?? I think your timing is waaay late. Loosen distributor and rotate counterclockwise from the top 1/4" at a time and see what happens. Too far and it will kick back against the starter.

Thank you DR ALLIS I am going oput to the shop in a little while to try that, what do I use to measure backlash, what tool?  The crank has a gear with a timing mark along with cam has a gear, as long as their respective timing marks are alined that part is ok reguardless of the gov gear? thanks again.
