I've been looking for a d17 or 180 to put a 426 in for pulling. Well i finally got a Series 1 D17 that i traded a junk 301 for. It had a weak PD. So this is how far i got on it so far.

I will be using a 180 torque tube, so i can run a bigger clutch. It will be one of my winter projects.

Let me know what ya think.

do you think the final drives will take it?

They should. Im not going to run a huge tire either. Prolly only a 18.4r30 or something around there. If they dont, i've got a set off a 180 i could use.

Also the plan is to lengthen the frame and side panels about 10 inches and have the turbo and stuff fit under the stock height hood. goin to mount the turbo where the battery goes.

Make sure you have a governor on the engine so when a final drive shucks all the teeth off of a bull gear the engine doesn't over rev.  Final drives prior to a Series 3 are same as WD and WD45.

Then perhaps i should put the 180 finals on it before i get started. Are they faster, slower? If they are faster that woud be a plus.

Slower ratio than a D17. The drive axle splines won't fit into an old D17 differential either.

The Donor

Now before anyone asks, why didnt i use the 180. The tranny was junk. Popped out of every gear.

Torque tube.

Attached

426 engine plate

I have to get the d17's tranny input shortened 1.5" to mate up with the 180's torque tube shaft.

More to come...

Surprised your even bothering with the power divider. I've seen those slip under a decent built 226 gasser. I have a bypass splined coupler if you need. Looks like an awesome project.
Yea, I can fix that.....

It doesnt take a 426 to break a d17 rear will maybe it does in cubic inches .  I am sure if he thought the project out then he has thought about keeping a rear in under it . Garry if you want to bash a mans project get the nerve to do it without my name . I  have the nerve to do it without using your name in a post.

Fellow up here had put a 440 crysler in a WD45 and had pulled several times with it.... until he shelled the pinion gear on the final. Then he found a wd final and put that in and was under a hard pull when the shaft snapped... boy talk about him bouncing.. then he got D17 final on it and shelled out the tranny... Then the 440 got put into a COCKSHUTT.

OK HERE IS MY STORY ON A D 17 .  KNEW OF A FELLER WHO PUT A 3 POINT ON THE BACK AND WAS TRYING TO CARRY A BALE ON THE LOADER AND ON THE REAR #1300 BALES  GIVE OR TAKE A LITTLE AND THE FINAL DRIVE BLEW IN A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME..MADE THE REPAIR AND NOT LONG AFTER THAT OTHER SIDE BLEW. I LIKE THE FACT PETERSON IS WORKING HARD AT THIS BUT AS SOON ALL THE GOODIES ARE BOLTED ON THE ENGINE WHICH IS HEAVY IN THE FIRST PLACE HE WILL NEED TO ADD A CRAP LOAD OF WEIGHT TO THE REAR IN ORDER TO GAIN THE TRACTION NEEDED. THUS FOR BLOWING GEARS ETC AS SOON AS THE AWESOME 426 IS BUILT..NOW I FEEL EDGERTON GEAR CAN BEEF THE PARTS NEED BUT MAY BE SUPER EXPENSIVE.. MAYBE PETERSON HAS A GOOD BUDDY THAT WILL MACHINE SOME PARTS... THIS WILL BE A VERY INTERESTING THREAD TO FOLLOW AS TIME COMES AND HOPE IT STAYS ON THE GOOD CONVERSATION SIDE..PETE WHATS YOUR IDEA'S ON GEARING AND INPUT SHAFT ? NEW?  USING OLD ?  3 DISC CLUTCH ? IS THE 426 STAYING STOCK  WHICH I DOUBT?  IS THAT A GLEANER ENGINE ?  GOOD JOB ON THE PICTURES !

I have seen a lot of Pictures of fancy painted repowered tractors but this is a first to SHOW some of the build up. I'm sure a lot of thought and research has gone into just the adapter plate.
Keep us posted as you go please, no matter what side comments are made.

Your only gonna tear it up if the rubber bites and stops spinning.  If you think  any of those multi turbo/multi engine tractors actually have enough behind the flywheel to hold the power, you are smoking your socks.  Stick one of those things to the ground and watch the pieces fly.  Tractor pulling is about 2 things, making power and fixing the first thing that breaks.  Mr Peterson is man enough to share his build and I appreciate that.  If I had the funds, I'd be right with him doing something different with some orange.  I'm curious about one thing, though.  What class you gonna pull in and where can we see it in person?

The adapter plate was pretty easy. it is the old 7040 plate just machined to fit the 180 bell.
Also i do know of a few tractors, a buddy of mine has a old Super stock tractor that pulled with the stock clutch shaft. And that tractor was thought to be bout 2000 HP back in the day.

Im goin to see how the finals hold up. and if they dont i will either have the stock gears and shafts cryo treated and try that. Then if that dont work i will just find me a 180-185 rearend and tranny and swap it in.

Now for sheet metal, I will be using stock d17 side panels that i will peice a section into. But its not set in stone. I will figure it out when i get that far.

Now for what class, most of the pulls i got to are just run what ya brought. But otherwise id just have to pull in the open class or super stock. Im hoping to have it around 5500 pounds. Then maybe up to 7500. I will be running a set of 18.4x26's from the front of our 8050.

With the smaller size of tire it will put less stress on everything.

For this year i just want to get it running. I wont be able to get a steel flywheel, so i will only be running maybe 2800 rpms. But it will be getting a 320cc roosamaster with 4x18 injectors with a hx52 holset turbo. Im doin some trading for the pump and injectors. Im pullin the hx52 off my dodge.
