Yesterday I reinstalled the rebuilt head and put engine components all back together. The timing revealed I can't get the pump closer than 21*BTDC, or 5* from where it's got to be. When I had the pump rebuilt last Christmas they put it together so the variable forward timing dot was 180* off. So instead of timing to cyl#1 I had to time to cyl#6 so as to see both timing marks on the pump. So the pump rebuilder is getting the pump back tomorrow and will put it back together the correct way so I can time to cyl#1. I don't know why I run out of slot adjustment the way it is now. The timing mark on the injection side of the window is 2/3 towards the bottom of the window and the driven side of the pumps timing mark is in the bottom of the window and can only get to within 5* of where it should be. Man I hope when it's put back together correctly I can get it in time. What the heck else could it be? I did get it running with starting fluid but with it off 5* it wouldn't idle and it quit. This is driving me nuts lol.

OK Doctor how could it be off one tooth? And if indeed it is how is this remedied? I didn't think this had been apart, but maybe. Can the drive shaft be hopped without tearing everything apart up front? Doc could the pump inards be off some to cause this? I was hoping for that!

It sure could be off one tooth because it was assembled incorrectly. It is remedied by draining the radiator and removing the lower radiator hose and then the cover over the gear and pulling the gear forward just enough to rotate the shaft (clockwise from the front) ONE TOOTH.....being careful of the rubber seals on the rear of the shaft. You can have the pump torn down if you want but I don't see how that's going to help the end result.

So I assume you recon someone has been in by this drive gear. Guess it surely didn't leave the factory like that. Huh. Well the pump guy is going to put pump back together correctly so I can time it to #1. And it sounds like it'll come home and still be off, so I'll do what you say Doc. That's only a couple hour job, right?

So guys I am just curious. When I originally got the tractor and reasoned the pump needed rebuild, my mech and I lined up 26*btdc and the pump timing marks as best I remember were right on. And since they are not on now I thought the error must be in the pump. That drive gear cant change a tooth just sitting there, and running a total of 1 hour? IDK. Thanks, Dana

pump mark may be in wrong spot, or you're looking at a scratch or something else thinking it's the actual mark. If you like, I can look this pump over for you. Ed.

Update and thanks for all of your help. The pump was checked and it's supposedly correct. My timing mark was 180* off because I installed the pump dot to dot and that driveshaft must be incorrectly installed 180* off plus one tooth. I thought the driveshaft end which hooks into the pump was tapered so it could only go one way but I just measured and it seems not tapered and the pump guy said it isn't tapered. Doc should I try to rotate gear 180* plus a tooth or just move it a tooth and install pump dot opposite dot? Can pump be installed first and then mess with the gear or should I mess with the gear and then install pump? Wow its about 100* here lol! Thanks guys! Dana

Mess with the shaft/gear first, then install the pump. Leave the dot out of synch so in 20 years the next guy can wonder what in Sam Hill is going on.
